The shape of the shackle between those 2 points is not relevant. If the spring is allowed to slide (removed from the shackle), at full suspension compression, how far rearward does the spring eye travel? Is the arc of the shackle capable of intersecting that point? You may need to move the upper mount rearward, or extend the length of the shackle in order that it can meet the intersect point.

That said, as @Happydaze notes, perhaps the real issue is the quality of the bushings.

The shackles have a physical stop where they hit the rear crossmember, so they are not able to rotate out to nearly horizontal. Because it can now operate though a longer arc, it can accommodate the length change.
