    You asked for “backing (plate) to backing“......To my knowledge, ‘37 thru ‘39 Chevy rear axles are the same. My ‘37 axle is 59” from wheel mounting surface (WMS) side to side. I am not at home presently and cannot measure between the backing plates until I return.

    However, a close guess would be about 53” +/- a little. Generally, the WMS to WMS is considered the most useful dimension when determining axle width. The spring center bolt to center bolt is 42.25” +/- .25”. I am in the midst of replacing my ‘37 axle/torque tube with a later model open driveline and TCI springs.
