Was wondering if anyone has mounted a 41 rear bumper and brackets on a 39 coupe. Is it feasible to mount and use the newer brackets or if anyone has done this. The holes are welded shut on the rear. Thanks for any info on this idea

The 41 rear frame is slightly wider so the bumper brackets don't line up with the 39 frame.

I cut up a Willys wagon rear bumper for my 39 sedan. Carved off the flanges that made it a channel and radiused the ends with a plasma, put a piece of heavy flat bar in the back of the bumper and ran it through the plate rolls at work to tighten it up and make it fit her shapely hips a bit better. Made my own brackets. Wanted to do this to an Overland stamped bumper but those are tougher to find.

I can't locate my early frame specs, I recall that later frames are 2" longer forward of the cowl however the actual widths allude me?

Thanks for the replies guys! "shapely hips" ha ha ha!!! I could have sworn I saw a coupe that had the brackets run under the rear pan or fender somehow on a 40 or 41 coupe.

Would you by Chance, have the measurements, for a 39 Frame?

Since my PC crashed I've lost LOTS of data and contact details however,
    • 37/40 frames measure 45-1/2" across the rear frame rails,
    • 41/42 frames measure 47-1/2", and the 41/42 side profile is completely different than the 37/40 on the front and rear. I just measured the 39 frame on my coupe and it measures 45-1/2"

1939 Willys Overland is 102" - the 1939 model 48 is 100". The Overland has the sharknose and hydraulic brakes the Model 48 has the same rounded nose as the 1937 Model 37 and the 1938 Model 38 and has mechanical brakes. The 1941 chassis is significantly modified from the earlier version, being 2" wider from the rear kickup to all the way back. The X member is different and so are the body mounts. The coupe rear fender wheel cutout is approximately 1 1/2" further back in the fender and the gas filler neck comes through the passenger side fender. The fenders are also notched on the inside edge to allow the bumper brackets to pass through due to the wider frame. The rear axle is also 2" wider. So all you need to do now is figure out which body and which chassis you will be using - oh yes and the 1941 coupe floor pan is completely different from the 1937-1940 Willys....
