The wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface of the rear brake drums is 59 1/2 inches for a 1940 Ford. I know the article above says 59 1/4 but I measured and got 59 1/2 in. The OEM 1939 Ford rear will have the "wide five" bolt pattern on the drums. The 40 does not. If possible, join the AAA club near you and glean info. from a person with a 39 Ford sedan. Also, the rear leaf spring count may be different for a sedan and a coupe. Give this fellow a call.. http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=165622&highlight=1940+ford+rear+end
'42-'48 rears are 1-1/2" wider unless you go with a wheel with a deeper offset you might have some interference. '36-'41 are the same width.
