Ive got a 53 merc with a 3 on the tree and a factory rear end.

The car originally came with an overdrive.

At one time in its life the trans was swapped out from a 55 ford with no overdrive and i cant drive over 45 mph without hight rpm's.

Where can i find replacement rear gears for this.

It might be easier to swap stump to stump if you can find someone looking for the steeper gears. Do you know what ratio yours is? My car supposedly has 331's but I can't confirm it until it arrives, hopefully in a week or so. If it does, I'd be open to swapping for a steeper set.

The 53 with overdrive probably has a 4:11 gear.

    My 55 has 331 gears and came with a 272 w/FoM . If you find a rear make sure it came with a V8 - Y block and not a 6 cyl or a standard trans with O/D .
personally if you are going to do a complete rear end swap , then go with an early Mustang 8" rear . They came with a 2.79 or 3.30 mostly . Can use Cougars , Mavericks , Comets rears also . If you search about 2 to 3 weeks ago I made a post on someones post about rear ends and posted all the rears with sizes and what they came out of . You might even get someone to trade a 3.31 center section for your 4.10 3rd member !
    Just a thought !

3:90's only will be a little difference from your 4:11's,maybe a 5 mph gain you need to be looking for gears from a Merc that had an automatic trans, does the rear in your Merc have a back cover plate?

65-66. Also, the 57 Ford is the same width. There's one listed in the HAMB cl***ifeds right now.
