    from so. cal

It probably is a little wider than you really want.It has a lot of brackets to cut off,and it really isn't a very good rearend. For free it will probably cost more to make work than it is worth.

Thanks for getting back on that. SO what is the best rear I can get for this car? one that will fit in and be a good rear. Thanks

  4. Try an 8" Ford...they aren't too wide and fairly inexpensive

Most 66 Malabu rear ends are 10 bolt Spicers. I ran a similar rear end under the 51 Merc I used to have for over 100K miles and it probably had close to that on it when I got it. Two real problems with that rear in a leaf spring car. One, as previously you have to cut off all the brackets and clean up the scabs that are left. Two the two cast brackets on the center section that the upper control arms bolt to will usually hit the floor board (rear end hump) on a car that is lowered.
Otherwise it isn't a bad rear end with the exception that it is a lot of work to change gears and the axle serves as the inner race for the rear wheel bearing.
And no it isn't intended for extreme horsepower but is fine for normal street driving.

    10 or 12 bolt?
if it's a 12, snatch it up and sell it!
they're bringing fair amount of money....
they're (64-67)around an 1 1/2" narrower than a 68-72 chevelle rear so if you want to run a bit more dish on the wheels, they help.
i ran a 68-72 chevelle rear for years in my 48 chevy coupe...
    with and without coil springs;)
and they're correct, the mounting brackets will have to be removed and perches welded on AND if you're gonna use the stock springs, move the rear end back 1 1/2" inches too.
unless you like the "altered wheelbase" look;)

i put a 70-81 camaro 10 bolt in a 48 chevy and it worked perfect. cool thing is you can still find 70-81 camaro/firebird at junkyards for cheap, just bouble check your rearends length, mounting surface to mounting surface and youll be ok...if you go with a ford youll have a different bolt pattern cause ithink 47 is 5x4 3/4

So it sounds like the camaro 10 bolt is the way to go. How's the 57 chevy rear ends measure up for these cars? Thanks for all the imput guys.
