  2. Since you have an OD transmission already, anything with a higher ratio will lower the crusing rpm. Try a 3.73:1 or 3.5:1 you will still have good acceleration for a dead stop and highway engine speeds will be low.

  5. check out toyota trucks (2wd) they are narrow have ford 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern also. they are cheap and stout, they actually have larger diameter axles than a 9". i had a 75' toyota truck with 302/c-4 and tried in vain to blow up the rearend and failed.they also have dropout 3rd member similar to a ford.

Most knowledgeable Hot Rodders measure a rear end width this way ( shown above :) )

Using the backing plate to backing plate method leaves too much room for errors. Brake drums will vary in width from 1 and 1/2 inches to 3 inches ( different models and different makes ) . That makes room for a error of 2 to 3 inches when using the backing plate method.

ALSO ... most of the on-line rear end widths site use the wheel mounting flange method.

IMHO ... the perfect rear end for a 35 to 40 Ford is the 57 to 59 Ford 9 inch series rear end. Gear ratios are available from 2.47 to 6.50.

    3.25
    3.50
    3.56
3.70 _______ ALL are fairly common and easy to find ..

The 9 inch Ford has the BEST parts supply ... available. Gaskets, bearings, seals ... along with millions of Ford donor cars :D

Here are a few on-line site with rear end widths ... most rodders go for a rear end in the 58 inch range for a 1936 Ford ...

Toyota 2wd, generally 3.73's...... these are narrower than ANY 9", just as strong as a stock 9"...cheaper (usually free) and EASY to get parts for and work on......
Later model 'Yotas...mid 80's and up are a little wider than the earlier ones, @ 2" or so......
