maybe some could help me, i have a dana 70 that i would like to pull the complete carrier/3rd member out of one rear end and install it in another dana 70 axle housing. now on the ford 9" dont they do that all the time , so cant the same be true for the dana, without having to check backlash and gear contact patterns, I mean if i'm only pulling the third member and reinstalling as a complete and not disassembled unit , evrything should remain the same ? please let me know if i'm on the right thought of mind or NOT ! thanks.
Nope, a 9" Foprd as well as the earlier 8.75 and mid'50s to early '60s GM rears had a drop out chuck. You dropped the housing with the pinion and ring intack. With your dana 70 you have to drop the carrier and pull the pinion seperate. When you put them in a different housing they will have to be set up again. No biggy if you have the housing on the floor, in the car you do it all laying on your back.
I have a Dana 70 in my 2500 HD truck and it is not not a "cassette" style design like the 9". To your question; If you have a diff where the ring and pinion is assembled in a removeable 3rd member casting, you can interchange them without changing the ring and pinion setup.
that is what i have, its all assembled and can be removed as one piece, thank you, i have been getting mixed replys so i was not sure, but it sounds like you are understanding what i am asking.
