There would be a tag in the studs that hold the pumpkin in. Sometimes they are rusted away or so pitted they are unreadable. They are generally all mid 2 to low 3 ratios. The width is either 55 or 56 inches, a Granada rear is slightly wider and seems to be more suited for a 40. We've used the Ch***is engineering rear spring kits.

I agree.......likely a 2.79 or 3.00 ratio. But, more importantly, may be a bit too narrow. Granada is about 58 1/2".

Maverick rear ends are in demand though....perfect fit for Shoebox Fords.

You don't need a TAG or ANYTHING to find a rear end ratio from ANY car .......

open end ( NON posi ).... hold one wheel still...turn other wheel TWO complete revolutions and count the turns of the yoke .... THAT is the ratio

posi rear .... turn one tire ( DON'T try to hold the other ) .. ONE complete revolution ... count yoke turns ... THAT IS the ratio .......

Actually the Maverick at 56.5 " is the perfect rear end for a 35-40 Ford.

It's exactly the width that TCI use in all their new 35-40 ch***is.

And yes, the ratio will be 2.79 or 3.00

    Maverick measures 56.50

The Granada is 58.00 as is the Falcon

Just a heads up the Early Bronco's are 58.00 and have the same bolt pattern as the 40 Ford. HRP

My mistake....sorry! The post said it is a '40 Ford and my brain thought '47/'48 in which I installed an 8" and I was remembering that.

A slice of humble pie for me!

58" is the magic number, as far as I'm concerned.

The spring pads should be the right spacing. I used a 58" wide 8", with 235/70/15 rubber on 7x15 American TTO's, with the standard 3.75" backspace.

Anything narrower, and you have to have a shallower backspace.

Mavericks only came with open 2.79 or 3.00 ratio's. Anything else would have been swapped in.

I tried to put a Maverick in my 40 coupe. It fit but was a little too narrow for the ch***is engineering sway bar. It hit the insides of the tires. I found the Granada was just right and still had plenty of room for 15x8 rims. The last two 40 pickups I built, I did use the Maverick in them.
I used the Chevy pickup front springs and hangers from a early 50's pickup. . Here is a tech I did on that install.
