Okay so I'm putting a 318 with a 490 trans into my 49 plymouth coupe. But before I do I just wanted to see if anyone has done this before and what rear end do you suggest I use? Any ideas?
My dad put an S10 rear under his 51 Plym. Dang near bolted in... he used the S10 springs and all. Just had to modify the frame just a bit to bolt the springs in place. Not a Mopar solution, but worth a thought. I should also mention he's running fairly wide wheels on the back... 15x8" IIRC?
Thanks! I'll keep it in mind! I'm trying to keep the exterior as original as I can. I just keep having the idea of the little coupe in the B&W cartoons of the past.
Thanks Big Dad! I was just talking to one of my buddies and he was mentioning something about that. I was originally looking for a full parts car for all this but it's coming down to the point where even donar cars are becoming cl***ics.. So anyone in the DFW (or outskirts TX) area have anything like what Big Dad mentioned? Thanks Katt Such a newbie I am...
I'm a fan of the Mopar 8 3/4 rear. They're as rare as dirt; under every big car, station wagon and many vans and trucks from the '60s thru the late '80s. ALL of them are 30-spline axles. Avoid the dif cases with the last three digits of 741. However, if you find one that is a limited slip, that unit itself will bolt into the 472 and 489 carriers. At least on the 489 cases, the two pinion support bearings are the same size as the desirable "Daytona" big pinion bearing from the 9-inch units. Stock vs. Stock, a Moapr 8 3/4 is stronger than a 9-inch. That's not a popular thing to say, and runs into the whole "Then why are 9-inch rear so popular," but it is an honest ***esment. Call any national rear end vendor that sell both, and they'll tell you it's true. Finally, if you can have one narrowed, the Mopar is a better choice. In the big Imperial, New Yorker and trucks, the housing is pretty wide. If you knock 4inches or more off an axle, you can have the shafts resplined by Moser for next to nothing, because they aren't tapered. On my '57 Chevy, I was able to find an E-body housing. The Mopar rear has the pinion offset to one side. By centering the pinion for the Chevy, I lopped a few inches off one tube, left the other alone, and only had to have one axle shortened and resplined. Pennies on the dollar compared to a 9-inch. -Brad
I'm a fan of the Mopar too. The backside of the housing opposite of the chunk is nice and round-looks good, and they are a drop-out style differentail like the Ford. You can still get performance upgrades for them like steel caps, spools, etc. if you need to as well. I even found a magnesium M/T chunk made for the 8 3/4" (for 60's fuelers) and I run that on the street.
www.cowtownmopars.org --You can post up on that site for a 8 3/4 Or if you need me to locate one , I'm sure I can too --i bought a whole car myself to get one .. You should not have to pay more than $100.00 for complete unit -- (IMO) -- Your Plymouth should be very close to my Desoto you should not need to narrow anything -- Some truth to 489 case being strounger but if its just for a old hot rod, you will be fine , that 318 won't cause either any harm -- Try to stay between 1965 and 1972 for years Some of the A- bodys (Dusters, Darts, etc) have a 4 inch bolt circle instead of 5 on 4 1/2 --typical bolt pattern for Mopar, Ford and AMC-- ............................................................................................. I have a 8 3/4 in my Dodge street rod truck too .. No problems there either .............. Keep it Mopar .. Any other questions, feel free to ask --Lots of good people here
Thanks guys! That helps me out alot! I'll check out that page. Going to the LeGraves field swap meet this weekend. Maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks again, Katt
