Been searching for awhile, haven't really found anything. I've read all about the stock spring being to stiff, and leaf removal. But I'm not sure about the Posie's, and whether they've improved on the spring rate with a full pack (I would ***ume they have). Can anyone here speak from experience about running Posie's rear Model A springs: do they ride well with a full pack, or do they benefit from having leaves removed? I emailed Posie's tech, but it's the weekend so I don't expect an answer from them until tomorrow. But I'll be sure to update this thread with their answer. I ask because I'm finally ***embling my ch***is (31 A pickup) with their 29-31RC, and I ran into the following things, so if I'm going to deal with 1 issue, I'd just as soon deal with them all at once. I have spring clip bars for 10/12 leaf spring, so I have a gap to fill anyways. But if I have to remove leaves anyways, I'll need to make spacers, rather than buy the spring clip bars for 7/8 leaf springs. One of the leaves has clamps on it to keep the pack aligned. It's wider than the cross member, so if it compresses enough during suspension travel it would bottom on the frame. But it would for sure be an issue if i remove any leaves. I'm wondering if I should cut this clamp off........... (see pic below)
I cut that big ugly clamp off of mine and made a new one that was smaller and still does the job. The spring works ok for the first 2" inches of compression but tightens up after that and I have been wanting to remove 1 or 2 leaves to get a better ride. I've been thinking of removing the one just above the leaf with the slider, but not sure about the next one. Has anyone else done this?
Talked to Posie's today. The tech with whom I spoke had the following comments: RE the clamp being so close to the x-member: he replied, "sold alot of 29-31RC springs and never had a problem, even on stock crossmembers." He added that there's not as much flex to that part of the spring, so it shouldn't be a problem. sure looks like it could hit to me though. RE removing leaves: "we recommend driving the car first, then if you need to, remove 1 or 2 leaves from the very top, not the middle". He added that their springs were "a little" lighter on the spring rate than a stock spring. Not sure if that helps anyone, but I personally am going to: start by removing the top 2 leaves. I can always add them back if I find the ride too soft, which I don't think will be the case. remove said clamps. even if they never hit the x-member now, they will be a problem once I remove the top 2 leaves. just ****s that I already painted in and ***embled it before finding that issue.
I have that same spring on a car I am building. I am about to replace it with the standard eye version. A posies tech told me that most likely I would want to remove leaves to get a softer, less harsh ride. Plus the standard eye version is 2 inches taller, and I only want the rear to go up 1.75" at most, so I will remove leaves for that reason too. I was also planning on removing the top 2 leaves to start.
