Hope maybe someone can help me figure this out. Checked through the Tech and couldn't find anything...

I'm running a '40 rear w/ torque tube in my Model A. According to AV8's book, the spring hangers should be welded to the top of the axle at 12 o'clock. I welded mine at 12 o'clock with a level torque tube, and when the spring is installed and the car is at ride height/ rake, the spring goes into a bind! The frame is at about a 3 deg. downward rake in the front, and the torque tube runs uphill to meet the ******. How do I fix this? Do I have something set up wrong? [IMG]

Cut those mounts off, hook up the torque tube in the final position and the correct rake at ride height, then weld the new mounts on so they are parallel to the spring. You just didn't take into account that you torque tube had to go "uphill".

Hey alchemy! Thanks for the help. I thought of that, too, but couldn't figure out how to make everything line up- I hadn't shortened the torque tube before I welded on the mounts 'cuz I didn't know the correct length without mounting the spring! Kinduv a "chicken and the egg" thing! [IMG]
I'll try it your way... thanks!

    Man you nailed it there.

This weekend I am rolling my whole rear end, spring, and crossmember under mine, connecting the drive shaft, and THEN deciding where to mount the crossmember to the frame.

Getting started is tough when you don't have a good starting point. Damn torque tube.

When setting up driveline mounts, if you are unsure about anything just tack weld it together. Then after you are sure it all fits go back and make the final welds. This means everything from motor mounts to axle mounting to brake pedals to battery boxes. Most cars need to be put together and taken apart a couple of times before paint anyway.

I just had to cut one mount off last night and reset it. I had welded one at 12 TDC and the other was about 11 and threw the rearend into a bind and made the adjustments on the radius rods so far out it wouldnt work. cut it off set it back up and WALA!! it works...books are great but the results are what counts
