With my 26 RPU there in not a lot of weight out back and with only 15lbs in the rears I only have half of the tread making contact. What would be the lowest pressure I can safely run without spinning the wheel in the tire? Tire size is 225?75x16 on 48 Ford wheels with tubes and I wont be smoking them up. Cheers JW
First how wide are the rims?? If the rim is narrower than the tread width you may never get a full patch on the ground. I run 255/70/15s on my Roadster at 16 psi , 10 inch rim, full pattern.
'48 rim is probably too narrow for your tire size,I don't think it would be wise to go less than 16 lbs.HRP
You could drill the "rim"portion of the wheel and run screws into the bead,..that's what we used to do on dirt with stock cars, sprints, etc. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The narrow wheel with the wider tire may never make a full contact patch, no matter the pressure. 225 isn't much by todays standards, but in '48 it would have been a big-*** tire. You may have to go wider wheel or narrower tire to get the sweet spot.
Ok, the tires tread is 6 1/4'' and the rim is 5 3/4. Im not sure how wide a 48 rim is but that's what I bought them as. I believe the tread may settle to 3/4 foot print and I will be happy with that and I don't wont to use screws if I can help it. Hope to run about 18lbs min. JW
I'm running 30 pounds in mine, on 15 inch Ford Themes rims. Tyres are old 4x4 things that have a kinda pie crust look. Not sure of width, probably 225 70s, and have full contact. Like you, I have hardly any wieght in the rear, varies as to how full the gas tank is. I think I get the full contact, due to the stronger walled tyre. I'm real carefully on wet days, they will spin without me even trying.

This pic is how it looks now with around 15lbs and with a spare tire and gas tank in the box that may be enough to run 18lbs without trouble... what do you guy think of that? JW
Nice ***, but I don't think yourll get away with running that plate... Oh yeah, the tyres. I'd experiment with different pressure as far as driveability goes, and not worry how they wear to much. The lack of weight means they won't wear out in a hurry, unless you drive it everyday. I drive mine everyday, and after two years, they still haven't worn much.
Moisten the tires with a pump spray water bottle ( house hold cleaner type) and roll the car across some dry pavement. You'll know what you got then.
