Historical usage stuff, cheater slicks vs. slicks:
Stock class cars in NHRA had to have tires with treads, and cheater slicks were simply given 2 little grooves as a token way of meeting the letter of the rules. They would never have been on a car in a modified/competion class car like yours with straight axle...anyone with drag tires would have used regular slicks.
Cheaters had the same rep as regular slicks...they were quite capable of killing you on the street. Most people also would not have run them on the street because they were expensive and short-lived...on a street used racer, slicks or cheaters would have usually gone home in the trunk to save wear, and if money was an issue there would have been a pair of $2 used tires from the filling station put on.

So...for proper correct vintage suicide, you want slicks with no grooves! You don't want your HAMB obit to denounce you for incorrect tires! NOTHING is worse than being caught dead with incorrect ride!

I got the shifter all figured out, the previous owner, installed the shifter, but didn't put the right shift arm on it! So after a little digging around I found the right arm, and now the shifter works as it should, everything is really coming together on this little car. Almost time to pop for some right looking tires! Any way I talked to Towel City and we came up with a good size in a Blackwall, just need to crack open the piggy bank!

Ok well I have saved up enough for some rear tires, I plan on driving this car so I want something that will hold up well enough, an I want something that will look period for the car. Should I stick with the cheater slicks, or maybe a pro-track style tire or should I go the m/t ET drags? Or just a good square tread street tire? Options options

If you're looking for a tire that will last awhile, then don't go with M/T ET Drags. They're a good track tire, but wont last long on the street. I don't know of a drag radial that has a "period" look to it in the M/T line. They've got some great tires that will hook up well, but wont look really period.
Pie crust slicks will look the most period, but most of them wont hook up as well as modern design tires. They do have a long life though, even if thrashed on a bit.

  9. Good article. Pleasure to read the different slicks and use of them.

I really doubt it will see much track time it's basically a street car, so I am torn!

I have the same problem hard to find a good looking affordable street tire. I am leaning towars the hoosier pro street radials 29x 12.5 x 15. Alot of mail order places are offering freee shipping until the end of the month so I am going to have to figure it out quick.

I looked everywhere for tires for my Packard but needed a particular size. I ended up going back to Diamond Back and they bought two new radials and vulcanized the white wall on them for me. Towel City seemed good to work with. I learned a bit about White Walls. I had Hurst Wide Whites and they were great except the white turned brown quickly and they were harder to clean. Come to find out new tires leach oil easily through the wall and some tire guys do not have white wall materials that will shield it form leaching through there WW. I remembered that of the dozen sets I have bought I could track right back to the tire. Coker and Diamond Back have a resin that is much better for WW's. Check with Diamond Back the guys were good to work with and have been in business for many years. GG

Here's a pic of the Hoosier Pro Street:

Not really a traditional tire, but I bet they hook up well. My buddy bought the Hoosier Quick Time DOT slicks and was pretty surprised to find out they are virtually worn out when they come new! The "tread" is a few squiggly lines, and very thin. The sidewalls and tread are both so thin you can collapse the 15" wide slicks he got to a couple inches thick. I couldn't believe there were two tires in the box they came in until he opened it!

    I guess I'm
Just gonna go towel city or
If I can find a good used set. I hate spending the money on used ones because usually they are several years old and or somebody is selling them for a reason lol

I used some American Racer (McCreary dirt track) tires for a few seasons and hooked up decent at the track, 1.80 60 ft with my 389. These are bias bly and not really a daily driver tire. Probably would be alright if you went to the track only a few times a year and had these on an extra set of rims. The set I have are 26 x 9 or 235 60 15 and fit inside my wheelwells before I radiused the 1/4's. They still have alot of tread on them but I switched to m/t slicks and they hook much better now I have a 12:1 455. The pair was only 150 shipped to my door.
I called and talked to the guy to get the softer tread they had and specified it was for drag racing.

Does anybody have a pic of there car with the American Racer tires on it? I'm just not sure how it will look. I gues for this car I am way more wanting a certain look than function.. Yhea yhea I know usually I'm function over fashion, but this time it call for the right look to finish it off right.. Or am I wrong?

I had a few pics with them on but if your going for the look I would get the Towel city tires. These don't look too differant IMO. I wanted something to go racing on without braking the bank and also to match the bias on the front. The American Racers don't come with full 11-12/32 of tread either new like a normal tire. More like 5/32 like a drag radial tire. pm sent.

There are several tread patterns depending on size and tread compound. Mine were actually 225 70 15 which were supposed to be 27", they were actually 26" tall when I got them.

If you're only making occasional trips to the strip, then I would agree that capturing the look is more important than anything else. It's not a huge expense to have a good pair of used wheels and slicks to pop on for the occasional drag strip run. That's the route I took with my Falcon. Extra pair of wheels cost me $50 at the swap meet for 10"x15", and I just put on my old Goodyear Eagle slicks.
