rebuilding after the crash

  1. This "Dutch Joint" deal is pretty cool! There is a man hole cover by my house that is held down that way. Why not 4 or 5 Dutch fasteners, just curios?

  2. thats just how he did it. tricky steves were done by tim also. steve has had no trouble with his. maybe he thought why reinvent the wheel this works. the hat and wheel do have a 2.5 thou press.

  3. I was just curious why not 4-6 Dutch fasteners when there seems to be plenty of room. Seems like it'd be twice the security. Those three fasteners pet adapter are all that's assuring the front brakes work. That .0025 press isn't gonna mean squat if those 3 fasteners shear.

  4. they are 3/4 of a inch long each. thats alot to shear

  5. Like I said, its a cool idea, and the best way I've seen yet to get brakes on our 5 spoke spindle mount Americans without welding on magnesium. If your happy with 3, I'm happy for you.

"" so we are going with a blanchard ground on both sides piece of t-6.""

T6 is not the material but the temper..6061 is usually t6 ..The plate we used to get at work that was blanchard ground was way stiffer and bending it would fracture..In McMaster Carr ground 6061 is T651..definitely different stuff than the big chunks of 6061T6 we used to get for some molds, as big as 4'x4'x12" and you could see the difference milling, drilling, etc..Just saying be sure its going to be as strong as you want/need..

  7. i called jim to ask him about the mid plate. i sure want to get this right the first time. he said its 6061 t-6 it will have some give before it breaks. the usual mid plates are 1/4 inch thick. due to mine also serving as a adaptor hemi-chevy its 3/4 inch thick. the plate will not go too far past the block so flex will be reduced. the frame rails are as narrow as they can be. like a fuel altered or funny car. travel limiters from the frame to the block will also be used. he said he went with the ground plate because its easier than trying to mill the plate flat. jim says this material is the best stuff for the application. i have to trust him he is the one with multiple engineering degrees. it has to be better than the cast one i had. any thoughts to a better material and i can pass it by him. while we were talking i asked how things went today. he said the halo bar is in. a pillars are being bent now. i do appreciate everyones input on the rebuild. there are alot of smart guys on the hamb. together we are smarter than if i go about this alone. i do mean that.

  9. I got a little more done on the hemi today. Im going to rering it so i ran a rabbit turd hone through the cylinders. I ran a tap down the head stud holes. The oil pan was smashed in the front after contacting the cross member. It also had a hole punched into it. I was able to work out the dent. I just need to weld up the hole. 20151031_193804.jpg 20151031_193542.jpg 20151031_195344.jpg

  10. I received the new flex plate the other week so i thought i would hold it up to the crank adaptor to check the fit. Im glad i did. The center hole in the flex plate was larger than the pilot on the adaptor. this won't work. the flex plate needs to be registered. I will need to call wilcap monday for a new one that will fit. I'm glad i caught that now. 20151031_194328.jpg 20151031_194505.jpg

  11. imagejpeg_1.jpg imagejpeg_0.jpg I scored this little gem today. Its a delta magnesium front cover. It has a bearing pressed in it that was designed to give the crank snout some added support. after talking to bob at hh; roger radar lechtenberg; and nitro neil about it I wont use the bearing. It will be pressed out. I need this cover so i can drive the second fuel pump off the cam. This pump will be used for the nitro. As a added bonus this cover has the ability for me to remove the round cover to change cam timing back and fourth. the gas and nitro cam timing are different. the main cover won't need to be removed to make the changes. the milodon gear drive allows for easy changes. the relief machined into the bottom of it is there for clearance when running a large bottom blower pulley This is a very rare cover and very collectable.

  13. Nice score on the front cover. So reinforcement of the crank snout will not be needed ?

    Hey, Racer-X;
Again thanks for the level of detail, esp the d/b on the spindle mounts. I think I missed the thread sizing (dia) for the dutch-mount? Really nice front cover, btw. Too bad you couldn't clone those in mag... :) . TIA.

  15. no need. we think it will create more problems than its worth.. if the block has been align bored the crank moves up. now the bearing won't line up as it should. there is no way to move the cover up without doing something with the dowels. even if the cover could move up it would then throw off the alignment of the pump.

  16. I stopped by the chassis shop this morning. The frame is now on the bigger frame table. Jim was cutting the floor out. Tomorro the body will be placed on the frame to check the fit. The doors and trunk lid were removed. Im taking them home to work on them. I need to put in the lexan windows. On the trunk lid i need to remove the inner skin. The radiator will be in the trunk. The lid was already louvered so the hard part is already done. Jim was surprised how heavy the floor was. We are really trying to get this out the door below 2500 lbs. 20151104_093843.jpg 20151104_093827.jpg 20151104_093834.jpg 20151104_093816.jpg 20151104_093736.jpg

This ought to be called the Bionic Coupe. "She's breaking up she's breaking up...." "We can rebuild him...... Better. Stronger. Faster"

  19. when i walked into jims shop today it smelled like a faulty wood stove was running. these old chryslers were set on a elaborate wood spacer that went between the body and frame. running the cut off wheel was burning the wood. jim thinks the majority of the frame will be done by thanksgiving. soon the body goes to the shop to get straightened out. i finished swapping over everything for the dana sure grip over the weekend. rings bearings and gaskets were ordered from hot heads. the pistons and rods went to roger in iowa for modifications and measuring. i found a mark williams yoke real cheap for the lenco on race junk. lots of details to keep straight. we are moving forward and im getting exited with all the progress. yes this is the bionic car stronger faster lighter. im going to need a bionic ear because with the 112 cam timing this car is loud.

  20. The current gear heads for life issue showed up today. They did a four page feature on the coupe. Also Cassandra was featured as this months hot rod girl. They used the coupe for one of the pics. At least the car went out on a high note. 20151104_211711.jpg 20151104_211727.jpg 20151104_211750.jpg

Not trying to be a dick about this but you should have used a thread chaser to clean the threads , a tap cuts metal , a thread chaser doesn't , just 1 of those little things ....

Brian, I have been watching the thread, great re-build on a real nice car. On the thread chasing situation, I bought a kit from ARP I think, that has all of the common thread sizes in it that you would use on engines through Summit, super handy..... Keep up the good work!
