rebuilding after the crash

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by racer-x, Sep 19, 2015.

  1. With your driving this around on public roads, and with the color of the car being hard to miss and with your car most likely having quite a healthy exhaust note  (as well as two parachutes hanging off the back) ... how often are you having casual roadside conversations with the police?

  2. I don't do stupid things on the street so it hasn't happened yet. I'm not saying it won't ever happen it just happened yet.

  3. Sorry, I did not intend to come across as suggesting you do anything stupid on the street ... just the car alone (appearance and expected sound) has to be enough to interest the cops I would think.

You'd think so...but I've put over 22k miles on my altered wheelbase, blown Chevy II, never been stopped by the police.

They have more important things to do, generally.

  5. Borntolose I didn't take it that way no worries. Alot of guys ask that same question. The car certainly attracts attention I just don't do anything to give them more of a reason to pull me over. Like squirrel I have driven thousands of miles in this car without any issues. It's no louder than a pack of Harleys going down the road.

  6. I am right along with Brian and Jim. Have driven my blown coupe for years on the street with zoomies, parachute and slicks. Have never been pulled over. Yet.

  7. We made it to Norwalk without incident. Tech and registration Monday. Race Tuesday then drive to Edgewater. Next up indy then back to Norwalk.

  12. Thanks guys.
In the tech line waiting. Fired the car last night only to find a oil leak between the block and oil pump. It was getting late so we fixed it this morning. The column needs to be disconnected and the headers need to come off. I had a o-ring on the trailer and proper tools to do the job. We let it sit for a few hours. Demons be gone it's leak free. 20210531_103339.jpg 20210531_103356.jpg

  16. The nitro attacks the o-rings. I use Viton when I can get it. They are tan in color and are not effected by nitro.

  17. It's a perfect night tonight. We are loaded up and ready. The day was spent gapping plugs; checking timing things like that. The track goes hot at 8am. They have a live feed on Facebook and you tube. 20210531_195755.jpg

    Brian, good on ya!
You are appreciating the hard work you continually put into this effort.
You have about the coolest car to ever have had license plate tacked on it.
I can only imagine the look on the guys face that just woke up from a loooong nap, seeing your car for the first time.

  19. Thanks. I'm feeling real good about the car. I had some time to work out some bugs that have popped up. The more it gets driven the better it becomes.

  22. Well that whole staging thing seemed weird and the large pop out the drivers side looked not so good. Hope everything is in one piece.

  23. Rolled the number four cam bearing. No oil to the top end. Bent two pushrods. Blew the burst panel with a big fire. Cut all the nitro wires going to the drivers side. Melted a fuel line. I put a new panel on in the shut off. I then drove it back to the pits. The damage was realized after the valve covers came off. It sucks but that's nitro racing. We will be back. 20210601_112543.jpg 20210601_114803.jpg 20210601_112552.jpg

Well damn that sucks :( But with your good attitude we know you will be back.

  25. Oh man,,,,,is that bronze coming out of the intake rocker in the bottom of the pic ?
Your right,,,,nitro is like that .

I remember reading many years ago about fuel racing .
The guy said,,,,,” when you can light 100 dollar bills and not flinch,,,then you’re ready for fuel “ .
It makes me cringe when I see those beautiful parts damaged like that,,,,,,you have an excellent engine,,,,and a great hot rod,,,,,good old Mopar !
Good luck on the repairs,,,,hope not too much is hurt .

That sucks, but a lot better than a rod hanging out of the block.

  27. We are on the way home now. It will be apart tomorrow. What ever it is it cant be that bad. I did drive it back to the pits. I have two fullsets of pushrods; full sets of bearings; gaskets etc. I have been on the phone. I can add oil lines to each head to prevent this from happening again.

Can you pin the cam bearings so they can't rotate?

  29. We are looking into that.

  30. Thank goodness for burst panels. In the old days the blower may have went into orbit. Sorry to see this Brian,:( looks like damage will be minimal.;)
