the plan is to bring the car to george porgies this saturday night. on the fourth of july i will bring it to the holtz chevy dealership for their huge car show. after the show i will convert it over to nitro for some testing at the grove prior to the meltdown. of course this is all weather permitting. so far everything has checked out on the maintenance after the shake down driving. the heads go back on tomorrow.
Standing by for the Woodward You Tube vids... I'm amped to see this run again, even if it's only in vids.
Brian, no one has ever told me this, or have I ever heard it, but I have wondered it. I know that you use high quality fasteners, but do you have to replace them every so often, because of taking it apart and torqueing it down so often. I see people doing it all the time at races, and just wondered. I figured you would be the guy to ask. Good luck on woodward av. sounds like a blast. Tony
the torque converter bolts seem to take the most abuse. we use squash nuts and lock tight on those. I inspect everything when it comes apart and before it goes back together. if anything looks questionable it gets replaced. I try to use grade eight bolts or arp products on everything.
Brian it is great following your build as it is top notch. As to Woodward, I went and watched the action last year and not sure if you attended as I did not see your car (and was hoping to after seeing at last years Meltdown). It was a little overcast and windy and noticed that dirt was blowing dust and dirt on the racing surface and I never saw anyone take a blower and try to clean in up. My wife and I left just before it rained so we were not there when it resumed. Since they are using the four lane highway adjacent to M1 Concourse they were limited to the width of the racing surface and with the K rails on both sides the lanes were very narrow IMO. That is not bad in and of itself but add some dust and dirt on a no prep surface (in essence) and it can make it a bit iffy. I saw a mid year Corvette tag the wall and watched a few of the big boys get out of shape. It they run it the same way this year and I had a say I would have them figure a way to widen the lanes and have a hand held blower on site to clean the surface occasionally. I know it is a new venue and deal for Roadkill but would be more fun to see the guys run all out, safely. Looking forward to seeing your car do its thing at both the Meltdown and Woodward.
jimdillon thanks for following along on the rebuild. stop by at the meltdown and say hi. cold beer will be in the cooler help yourself. my son lives in Clarkston mi. he attended last year as my car was not ready yet. he sent pics of the narrow lanes to me. he mentioned a few of the faster cars getting a little loose. unlike t.v. that's real street racing. the brain needs to be connected to the foot to avoid a disaster.
Brian, you've done an outstanding job. I admire your dedication and attention to detail. I just wish I was still up there to see it in person. Sent from my SM-G920V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I will be there Ethan and I will be rolling out sometime on Thursday and getting there on Friday. I am looking forward to the Meltdowns
enloe make sure you two have extra cards for your cameras. there is more to take pictures of at the meltdown than the hot rod reunion. you guys will be very busy trying to capture it all.
Brian it is interesting to watch cars racing on Woodward although it is a tad different than the street racing we did on Woodward a little south of there back in the 60s. Your son would be happy to hear I ran a 64 Plymouth Fury back then-great car-would love to own another. I know you have talent driving these cars but then again there is a guy in the other lane. Will be back again this year to see how it goes. I guess I remember why this thread started in the first place. With the Meltdown and Woodward stuff on the horizon there is some good racing to look forward to.
I also did a lot of street racing in a 64 plymouth. i had a sport fury that went 9.50s i can't wait to cruise woodward with my son the following week. he has a 500 inch indy cylinder head engine in a 69 super bee. word has it there won't be a mopar display at 13 mike road this year. the parking lot is gone. i remember all to well how it started. i will do a careful inspection of the brake lines. i don't want to start a rebuilding after the rebuild thread.
1/8 mile. The speeds still get over 150mph. Its alot harder to do on the street. Chassis setups become critical.
After a fun holiday weekend street driving the car to two car shows work began to convert it back to the track. Some testing will take place sunday then its on to the meltdown. The gas was drained along with the water this morning. The new nitro plugs are gapped and installed. I also put the slicks back on. I sure like the look of the bear paws. Some day i will have a set for the street tires. Theres a reason why it took me thirty years to get this set. The pic says it all we are ready
The car made it to the grove today as planned. This is the first time running the car with the new trailer. We put up the awning for the first time. There was a little bit of a learning curve there as we expected. We will be able to get it up next event in half the time. The recently purchased tool cart that gets parked by the car made life alot easier for between round maintainance. Im training my friend mark on how to service the car. He has shown a interest in learning how to do more so today school was in session. Today was more about going through the motions than making killer passes. Nothing broke so we just need to pollish it up for next weekend. We did a full servicing on it before we brought it home.
Thanks. I cant wait. Safe travels. I plan on showing up wednesday evening to get in line. with the new trailer i want to be able to manuver it in the pits before it gets too crowded.
I'll be at the Meltdowns on Saturday mostly just to see your car, keep it together, can't wait. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
First run at the Meltdown. Brian let off early as this was a test pass. It hooked up and went straight. Jim
