Hilborn needs to get the barrel valve back before they comment. There will be a call tag included with the new one coming monday. The new bv wont go on my car without a set screw positively holding the bushing in place. The dent will stay for a while. Jim is very busy and has no time to replace it. It wont effect anything it just looks out of place to me. I guess it can be considered a character mark.
Im at rogers shop dealing with the wheels and brakes. The wheels turned out to be for chevy spindles. With no others available we are doing what hot rodders do and thats make them into fords. We have a ford hub to get measurements off so we are machining for races and seals. The pic of the back side of a wheel is of the reproduction aluminum five spoke. There are threaded holes to mount a rotor. The originals dont have material there so i have already made a adaptor that will press on. Its all very time consuming.
Would it have been too difficult to remove the adapters, that took a very long time it seemed to make, from the old wheels? Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
The wheels are the last piece of the puzzle to get back on the road. I cant wait for the hamb drags. I have tried for several years to get there. It will be fun running at a new track. We plan on trying a few things as we prepare for drag week. Is mokan a nhra track? I need to make one more pass to get my cross over licence.
The old adaptors are on for good. If i would want to remove them i would have to turn them off in a lathe. The other issue with them is they were set up for a anglia spindle. We are now using a ford spindle. They have different dimensions. Good question.
Yes mokan has a good shutdown the return road is a bit sketchy but a car with suspension isn't a big deal but my dragsters solid suspension is a bit rough lol it is a ihra track and is a lot nicer than George rays lol but has the same vibe if you need anything Brian I'm only 10 min from the track glad you are gonna be able to come Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
It would be fun to hit george rays on sunday. I have not been there in a few years. Too bad mr george ray is gone. He was one of a kind. Thank for the offer of help. Im hoping it all goes smooth and i dont need to take you up on that.
If you decide to go to George's on sun I would go too that would be a great place to run my dragster especially for some good pics with the 57 chevy push car Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
A register was cut on the inside of the wheel. Being a casting there is some variation on the size. We cut in enough to have a .125 register. The adaptors are then cut to be pressed on.
I got home after a 5 hour drive to find that the new barrel valve had shown up. The new one is pinned to retain the bushing. I dont know if this was done special for me or if this is a design change. The incident certainly has not gone unnoticed at hilborn. I will follow up with them soon.
I'd say it was done special, otherwise the roll pin hole would also be black anodized. Think I'd still be more comfortable with a threaded set screw with lock tight, but they should know what will work.
^^This is not the kind of R&D one wants to get paid for. I try not to think of what could of happened after a less abbreviated pass. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I wish i got paid. The main thing is the videos recorded the incident. Now hilborn will decide if they are going to make a design change. Im thinking they will. They cant have anything like this to ever happen again. Everyones safety is my biggest concern.
I started mocking things up this evening. I have a good idea how to proceed from here. All three steering arms need to be heated and bent. They can be rechromed at a later date. I think the brake caliper brackets can go were the spacers are now between the spindle and upper steering arms. Then i can make the tie rod. I think making and mounting the caliper brackets will be the hardest part. It all sounds so simple. Im sure it wont be. At least i have a plan.
I put the new barrel valve on today. Hilborn put the roll pin on the bottom of the bv. This is a good idea. The pin is now trapped between the bv and the injector casting. It cant possibly come out.
I plan on bringing the drag week trailer with me. That way i have nitro tools oil and slicks. I can drive it down on gas then convert it over to nitro at the track. I plan on doing everything the same as what i do for drag week. I will be trying a few different things related to exhaust and cooling. There is always something to learn.
