I swapped a 5.0 Mustang into my Jeep Commanche. Made it a fun little parts hauler. A sbc would have been easier, but I had the Ford engine and trans. Don
Neck deep in his Mothers Belair (Great Grandmother bought new in 1956 and drove till 1988 and was 88 years old) on rotisserie and no room to breath! Pete
Because of a problem on this site. I have been watching this post and couldn't post.. Jeeps 4.0 engine has more than six versions of cylinder heads that I can think of off the top of my head.. Many not interchangeable between models. Different heads/valve sizes/stem length/diameter/springs and other valve train parts. You cannot just take a 4.0 head and bolt it on another 4.0.Even same years...Disaster will ensue.. Modern VIN codes are on a vehicle for this reason. If you want odd problems, swap non matching VIN parts.. The factories do changes to these things that the common guy doesn't recognize. Vin code, usually the eighth digit, for engine must match VIN code for replacement head.. Not just casting numbers!! The bone yard may not be the fault..
No combination of factory 258 or 242 heads, blocks, cams, valves, or pistons, of any generation, produces an interference engine. I have been building and racing the Jeep-6 for three decades. I am not sure where you heard this information.
In your opinion, the head that clearwater(new head with new casting) sells for the 4.0, Is that the way to go? Thanks Pete
It is a good price, depending on shipping to your location. There are year-to-year variances in port size, and a few dowel pins, for location to take into account for. 1996 and up have a different valve cover. The early 0331 casting ('99-up) were a little thin, and prone to cracking. This was corrected by 2000, as far as I know, but I stick with 0630 heads, just the same.
Give how long the 0331 casting has been in service, entropy should have long weeded out the thin ones.
sounds like the P.O. of the head did a brick on the pedal to kill it move and floated the valves . Dumb*** kids around here do that to there cars before sending them to the yards . seen several good engines destroyed beyond saving to amuse themselves .and I would have bought the hulk for more than the yard would give them .
