I'm looking to get my 49 painted here in the Midwest (I'm in Madison) and am looking for any recommendations or references for shops that do good work and are pretty reasonable. Like everybody, I'm on a budget and am not 100% sure I can afford to do this before next year (maybe), but I would like to start a conversation with somebody as I am going to get this done as soon as I can. I'm willing to drive a few hours in any direction from Madison, but in doing so really need to know I can trust the shop I'm bringing the car to, to do a great job. Can anybody recommend any shops in the area? For those that might be interested in the work, here is the info on the car and a photo. Car was last painted in the 80's. The clearcoat is flaking off. One local shop says I should go down to bare metal, the other says scuff it down through the paint and I'm fine. I don't want to paint this car again so I'll let you tell me what is best to do. The car is SOLID. From the bottom of the car there is no rust that I can find. The trunk is solid, all wheel wells are solid. The guy who did the car in the 80's shaved the doors, deck, and frenched the lights. I can only assume he did a good job as there is no bubbling or any signs of rust anywhere except along the rear deck of the trunk, along a seam line. (And that looks to be smaller than a quarter and just bubbling). I'm looking for a very dark purple, inside and out, with subtle flames in either a pearl, ghost style, or silver. I'm not in a hurry. I do want it done right, and to have the body work looked over... I do understand that anything can be under this paint--so as long as you are a straight shooter then we can do business.
This member did Ian Berky's car and it's awesome. He's top notch. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/member.php?u=55
