i felt bad cuz,i already knew about Bass' ride,Tims, and recently chooch1950's red oxided primered shoebox,, and i hope you guys dont take offense(but it does look damn good!) ...my main plan was to just lower and get it in shiny bare metal,,but since part of my garage heat is from the dryer it puts out a form of humidity,,so i was starting to get a VERY tiny bit of flash, which probably woulndnt amount to much, but in the long run,i figured id better get it into primer,, , and ive been fucking broke since i bought it,so i started digging through my paint cabinet and found a couple quarts left over from when i primed my farm truck red oxide, but at the time it came out so 'bright' i REprimmed it black as soon as it dried. ..well back to the story,i found two quarts of the left over "red oxide" primer and a quart of black primer,so i mixed them together and it worked pretty good.. anyways, just thought id post some pics of the pile,i know its no hot rod compared to "the Gooch's" standards,,but i hope to get it on the road soon as soon as i can find a cheap donor ride for the engine/tranny/.etc... sorry,
Hell Butt, why you say sorry....Yet to see anything but cool/unique stuff come out of that grage of yours...Whatever the primer color, i kinda suspect you'll be doing anything but the USUAL. cheers MAIKI
B R , theres better Merc pics at the end of "Pic-O-Merc" Red oxide matches rust really well, LOL......OLDBEET
looks bitchin to me!! I love the primer look (Dont get me wrong, I like paint!) but unless you start mixin and matchin its gonna be a pretty close match to someone elses color.. and there isnt a damn thing wrong with that!! Hell, a buddy of mine had a rattlecanned flatback baja bug.. we used to tear through the bushes in that thing, and about every other month "retouch" with a few fresh squirts!!!
I never really understood the black primer thing anyways, maybe it was more left coast. My dad had a body shop in the mid 60's to the late 70's and all I ever saw him use was red oxide. I was and probably still will run with red oxide...kinda of a go with what you know thing for me. Another thing I don't remember was a car that was completely in primer....usually just the area that you finished over the weekend until you got most of the car done and then the whole car came out with a shiny new paint job. I remember alot of auqamarine blue poly cars with red oxide patches all over it then whammo is was a palomar red hot rod! Red Oxide is cool.
thanks C9! and guys, i didnt just primer over the rust,i was off since the 19th for christmas and did nothing but remove surface rust (and strip it down to bare metal) patch rust holes,(no rocker panels yet )weld up trim holes, shave the handles, and between being a dick on the HAMB,it was a full time JOB. later

Years ago I heard it referred to as "Hot Rod Red". I thought it was an industry standard, that and "Hot Rod Grey". It's only been in the last few years that I've seen black as "the" color.
lol in a couple years well see a giant fleet of red oxide shoe boxs and a whole mess of rpu's converging in kansas, and then they will know the HAMB is in town for the drags lol
yeah it does look good. I was pretty close to going that route with my '49, but then found a satin green. Besides can't have too many red shoeboxes in DFW.
