It's a good thing you didn't boast about the Model A's late model V-6 power, you drew enough fire for slamm'in the red steelies! I have either been around far too long, or not long enough, but I have to ask; what does the Von Dutch of rodding mean? Also, is there a particular meaning ***ociated with red steelies? Is that kind of like wearing the earring on the "wrong" ear? Share the secret with all of us................

Used to be, red wheels were red because the whole drivetrain was red. Engine, ******, driveline, rear end and wheels were all painted out of the same can. Also the hollow in the drop axle around the drilled holes and the radius rods if they weren't chromed. All the non moving ch***is was painted black. Usually GLOSS black. Then the body got the GLOSS black treatment as soon as it could be afforded and the body work was done. Unless the owner kept breaking parts, of course. [IMG]

Hot Rods were basic two tones, red moving parts, everything else black. A little pin stripe here or there & some chrome for that added touch of cl***.

If your body work wasn't perfect enough for black then you painted it red or yellow. [IMG]

    Then the 60's happened. [IMG]

I don't think that came out right. So you're saying people with red wheels don't understand the roots of hot rodding? [IMG]

Red has bad juju for me. I've had about 30 cars, of which only two were red. The only wrecks my wife and I have ever been in were in these two cars. Five wrecks in those two cars. I don't even like to wear red if I'm driving [IMG]

Hey Crease...what are those wheels? Mine are similar but different, made by Kelsey Hayes with a 5 on 5.5 bp. Those look good on your car.

Naw, I think he's just sayin' that some people do certain things because they think they are supposed to in order to be cool, not because THEY want to. And then it's hard to tell who's a poser and who really loves something for the true sake of it.

Kinda like when everyone started getting tattoos again. Now you see tats and you don't know if it's just some college boy trying to look like a bad*** or an ACTUAL bad***. LOL [IMG]

  15. Fuel Pump, I love your 50. I am gonna have to do the one piece rear window thing. That looks really good.

I was going to do red on my 49 shoebox but decided it was overdone. Even though it still looks really good! My friend suggested black but that is definately the next color to get overdone, even though it looks good. So, I decided on a gold/yellow color. I just painted thenm and haven't got the tires mounted so I am not sure how it will look. They will be covered with caps anyway. Do what you want because it will all be overdone before too long. Your'e going to have to do a lot more than paint your wheels a dramatic color to be different anymore. When you start seeing this stuff in all the magazines including VWTrends and all kinds of TV shows like Rides and Monster Garage it has officially hit the mainstream and everthing will be copied to no end.

Black was cool in the 60s-70s when I was a kid. I still like them. I did red on a rootbeer brown 72 Ford shortbed back in 70 when you never saw red wheels. Baby moons and trim rings too. I got more comments than if I had spent the big bucks on custom wheels. Now I am getting really tired of red wheels on everything although on a traditional rod they still look right. On a 50s-60s car they reek of a lack of imagination IMO. Maybe the straw or orange colors of the model A. The apple green is barfy.

I bought my wagon as a stocker.. Red with red wheels.
now its flat black with a glossy blue roof, had the choice to paint the wheels, but just put full wheel caps on instead.

the red goes with the blue just fine!

oh yeah, its flat black till the body work is finished.. not because its cool [IMG]

They aren't mine, but I love them. According to resident wheel expert SoWhat, they are Firestones or Clark wheels. I know that these have had some m***aging, but don't have the full low down. Yours look great!

I think red works on about any car, pre 50's really. When it comes to the 50's car, I think it looks clean with a wide white, red rim, then a big chrome hubcap.

i painted mine white - only cos red wouldn't go with the baby blue of my wagon.
as for the von dutch thing - i'm sure retailers don't have a clue who he was either - theres a shop in town that sells accessaries for Mazda rotaries - mostly wheels and clothing- but they've got von dutch t shirts in their window display - as i understand it von dutch was a racist - so why put a von dutch t shirt on a dark manequin - thought about going in and asking if they were making a statement
