Looking for some help finding decent filter for the small versions of red top fuel filter get ups.

Had picked up a WIX 33900R thinking it was the right element but after pulling the chrome bowl off I realized I had the smaller of the 2 versions from Summit or Jegs. So the 33900R was too big.

Even worse the used filter element has glue separation.

Quick search here and elsewhere turned up no alternatives except for original from Summit or Jegs.

Don't really want to replace the whole unit as the '39 is driven dang near everyday.

Do you guys have any options for elements that drop in?

I’d just take the old filter into the store and let them measure it. I like Wix. Also make sure to get the top gasket securely in place and check for leaks after you start it. Those cheapo red housings have a reputation.

Thanks Squirrel. Unfortunately that is the larger version which takes the WIX.

Good part is I didn't know about Carolina Racing Supply. Thx

This is definitely one of the pitfalls of taking over someone else's build and using it as your daily. One of these days I'll learn...

Alchemy, I read a bunch of bad news about sealing up these things. Feel like someone is queing up foreboding music...

I'm hoping the local Napa has some options.

If it were my car, I'd redo the plumbing to use a filter I can get easily. I still use the in line metal cans like Wix 33032 and 33033, as well as the (now hard to find) 1/2" version.

I'm right there with ya on changing this over to something standard.

Came up empty at Napa and Oriellys. Even Napa couldn't look it up by size! So disappointing. What ever happened to proper parts counters and speed shops?

Got a replacement on the way from Summit. I'll use it to get me back on the road till I can acquire a decent replacement.

Thanks for the fast help guys.

I have a couple of old Holley can types I picked up at a garage sale 40 years ago. I still use one in my car. The elements were the same ones that went on Ford fuel pumps. The square o-ring was the same IIRC.

Frams were orange and look the same. I think I have one somewhere.

Fram HPG1 was the standard but its no longer available.... It's slightly bigger than the chinese red top version.

Roadster Supply and So-Cal San Dimus both show the Red top filter. Surely they would have the replacement element? OTB makes one with a spin on filter. Sadly the really good one So-Cal used to sell with a spin on filter is no longer available, I used several on my and customer ch***is. Many years ago I bought complete WIX units with a spin on element. They were big enough I called them a lifetime filter.

  15. If you really want to keep the can style, pick up a used fram can, they are on ebay. Use the wix cartridge that you bought. Wix flows better than the fram cartridge.

That filter looks close to the size a Shovelhead , Harley has inside the oil tank . They are a HD dealer only , to get a good filter . Toss that thing and get a filter that you can get an element for . Buy 2 elements , and your good for the duration

  17. I know this is an old post, but I have one of those red top canister filters. I ordered the replacement filter from Jegs and received the filter in the pic. Called to let them know and they sent me another that was just as bad. Not only that but the new seals in the kit were not the same as the originals. They replaced a flat rubber seal for the thru-bolt with an O-ring, a lower inner seal with an ID that is larger, that won't seal properly, and a shorter spring that will not seat the filter media tightly.

I did a review on their site along with pics but they removed it. Guess they didn't like me suggesting they monitor the quality of their chinese suppliers.

Needless to say I just removed the whole unit from my system and went with an easily replaceable in line metal can Wix 33033. Simple solution, clean fuel.
