Well, it seems to me that you'd be trying to put a new dress on an old whore Those Edsels didn't have wide whites when they came out, and and it'd look pretty shitty if you did. There's just not too much you can do to it to make it "traditional". That might be a better ride for you to learn the mechanics of things, instead of trying to be Joe Cool. No one will fault you for that. Maybe if you follow one of the other threads that's been on here about lettering their front or rear fender, just letter yours as "School on Wheels". Then if anyone asks, "You're learning as you go". And that's what I think. HellRaiser
I personaly don't give two shits about what others think(ok in some cases it is nice to get a compliment on something you worked hard on) But I have a 1956 Buick Special Wagon, I had the wheels on it with Some mooneyes Starburst caps and 5 inch Chrome Bullet Centers. Wheels were red for a long time, They looked great, I recently had them blasted and powder coated white, and it looks damn good with a white wall and white wheel. I am sayin' that because I think that wagon you have would look good with some white wheels, even faded like previously said. with some little skinny whites would make it too cool!! Red wheels are cool to though, I have had them on numeours cars! Good luck with this post and have fun with what color you choose for that cool wagon!
I was showing my '50 Merc. at the Oakland Roadster Show back in the eightys, with red wheels and I was the talk of the show. (Good or Bad )I say run what you want. My .02
First off, screw what other people think. This is not only a good thing to do with cars, but life in general. Perhaps your concern should be how well ANY color is going to look on your wheels. Your plan should be to get something that will compliment the color of the car and it's body style. That's why certain colors and certain modifications only look good on certain cars. Just like a painting, colors and shapes should compliment each other in order to be pleasing to the eye.
here here! yeah man that color is gonna be a hard one to match. im a rookie too, and loove the hell outta some red wheels but i dont think the red will complement your wagon....? but its all about what YOU like... Rafa-
The hell they didn't! Just about EVERY new car in 58/59/60 had wide whites...or were at least available with them.
DO what you want, Opinions are like Assholes, everyone has them, and some are just alot bigger than others.
I think she will look great with the wide whites and red rims, if not repaint the wheels since you know it will be bitchin' with the wide whites!
Are you gonna paint the car? Red wheel with that color will not look right IMO. BU ti liek red wheels when paired with a proper body color. Wheel color needs to compliment, not detract from the main focus...the car. Like tits on a woman, they need to compliment, not overshadow.
I run red rims I like the way it makes it look. It's what building your own car is all about not what other people want you to build but what you want. I hear all the time I should make mine a gasser or put a huge engine in it but I like the fact it has the little 4 banger in it but shit it gets 30 miles to the gallon and drive fairly well just not very fast. It's what you like no matter what you can't make all of the people happy all of the time anyways so do what you like and if you paint your rims and don't like it repaint them I have$15 in mine I almost went kept the white I painted before the red but love the red. I don't care if it is trendy I dig them that way and when I get sick of them I'll figure something else out.
I really Dont G.A.F what anyone says..I have a nice red color on my steel wheels for my 53 chevy. chrome chevy beauty rings from "53" and the stock dog dish Caps with the blue Bow Tie..I think they look great..and I dont really G.A.F. what anyone else thinks! so what a ya think about that?
Here's some red wheels on a big old wagon. When it hits the road again I think they will be black but only because I'm bored with them. I like red wheels just fine.
BORING! How about some blue/green metallic/pearl sort of, come on, I DO have an imagination theme and spider caps? I hope that reads right. And remember, you did ask
Had red wheels, I liked them for a time. But I noticed all these greaser clowns playing dress up like the Fonz rolling by in thier Honda diggin' my flat black econoline with red wheels, I hate those guys. Wait, I also have a honda...I guess I got sick of them, went to the blessing, red wheels everywhere. I noticed the people in these red wheeled cars were douchebags not all of them but most, I'm not a douchebag (well, I hope not). so I painted the red wheels ORANGE. Why orange? I had two cans of it. Now the truck is green, so the red would look like a christmas tree, but the orange,,ohh it's disgusting. I love it.
Okay photoshoppers, can anyone give us some guidance? I'd love to see the wheels from that beautiful Merc wagon on mine
so any body care to tell us how became traditional to rock red rims? ive heard a couple different stories but just wondered what every one else has heard since the conversation came up anyways....
Didn't red wheels get "overdone" when people started putting them on flat black '89 Chevy trucks, 91 Nissan Sentras, and 79 LTD's?
Gotta agree with DeSoto on this one...red wheels ain't bad provided they flow with the design of the car. I guess it's all about what you value. In my mind, they're more closely associated with rods than with customs. Having said that, I think you're likely to get some flak when you combine styles/trends from different periods together...and rightfully so if a traditional build is the goal. Seeing an early 60's land yacht with 3" or 4" www's, red steelies, spider webs and skulls just looks silly...there is a difference between "traditional" and "nostalgic". From where I sit, the whole point of the HAMB is to preserve traditional rodding/customizing...building cars the way our forefathers built them; using traditional methods, parts, and styling cues. IMHO, that's what makes our cars unique. Take it for what it's worth, but in my biased opinion, I'd like to see it done up with fogged steelies, spiders, and 1" whitewalls. Goodyear has a nice "Custom Super Cushion" tire in a 1" or 2 1/4" whitewall....both are period correct and would look fantastic on the Sledsel. But hell, don't take my word for it...go get some old littlebooks and take a peek for yourself; I'm sure you'll find something that will suit you just fine (and it'll be correct). And please, for the love of Christ, let's not get into the whole "build it the way you want" BS...what we need is a meaner, more intolerant HAMB dammit!
Love 'em, but not on some stuff. I've got a set on my galaxie, but it's red and white, the interior is red and black, and i'm running dishes and rings on them too. No offense, but since you asked, they'll likely look like ass with your wagon. Go with the faded white recommended earlier. Again, just my $.02
Let me make this clear .. I DONT HATE RED WHEELS ! Look at KiwiKevs Wagon.. Cream Body, Woody Paneling & CLEAN.. Lends to the bright red wheels. The Edsel is SEA FOAM GREEN... It needs a color that will Flow with the base color of it, Thats why i suggested White with a Fogged Candy Translucent Green center. If you really wanna talk about the "DAYS GONE BY"... The Guys who ran Ran wheels on Kustoms ran a full wheel covers and you could only see the Red ring between the cap & tire.... & not many Hot Rodders ran red wheels And sometimes i get a lil pissed when Newbe Check Book Hot Rodders have a stern Attitude about the way Shit is when they have just "BOUGHT" in to the hobby..
