That's where they get a bad wrap- when people just buzz-bomb their dirty wheels right next to the worn out radials without masking anything off or taking the wheels off the car. Done right they will always look good- but done cheap & dirty nothing says "white trash poseur" any quicker- and I mean that in the most loving way
i think that white would go pretty nicely with your car the way it is.. or try doing something to match the main color on the body.. if you paint em red the car won't look coehesive.. in my opinion you'd want the eye to flow over your car and not to have someone look it over and get stuck on the bright red wheels. but not in a good way..I am a painter so I think more about paint and color combanations on cars a lot.. cheers on what ever you choose - lolita
Maybe its just because I'm a checkbook newbie hotrodder but I think this looks pretty cool...and is a nice contrast against the seafoam green/aqua. Red and green are complimentary colors ya know.
I've had mine on my roadster since 2000 and still like them, especially with the dark blue paint and red grill insert. Besides they look great on the Rigor Mortis Bonneville record holding coupe, too.
That's an interesting claim which seems to go against a lot of photo evidence. Care to clarify/offer proof?
The next thing everyone will get sick of will be metal flake and gassers. I guess when you see the same thing over and over again, you start to not like it.
Well, off the top of my head, there are color shots on the covers of most mags of the period....I'm looking at a Sept '58 issue of Hot Rod with a red '32 roadster on the cover...color shot...red wheels with olds? spinner caps. On the same cover, there's a pic of some drag action with a white 3w deuce with red wheels w/ alum. disks. Sept. '56 issue of "Mechanix Illustrated" has a picture of a crazy homebrew roadster with red wheels. Here are a few off ebay; Jan '62 issue of Hot Rod... Jan '55 Hot Rod August '58 Hot Rod May '59 Hot Rod August '52 Hot Rod May '57 Custom Rodder I'm sure there's many, many more.
Dude, paint your fu*king wheels whatever color you want...this is so old...red looks good...so does chrome...be different!
Wow--thanks for the Photoshop work! It looks good low! Dig that picture phone in the 1956 Mechanix Illustrated. Pretty damn good guess, huh?
Red wheel are fine on the right car....................not a 91 Lumina. Personally, if using steel wheels on a 50-60s rig. I like them black with chrome acorn nuts.

i like red wheels on a whole bunch of stuff. dont worry what others slamming them. go for it. -scott noteboom
I think you should paint or primer your car one color first, thin deside what color wheels. it would make things a lot better on the eyes.Just my 2cents but what do I know I just clone car...................
It depends on the car i have red wheels on a 53 pontiac but it has red on some of the trim so it looks good I think alot of older cars came with red wheels my dad's 33 plymouth had them. To me they don't look good on newer cars mid 60s and later but that is just me.
"Back in the day" (I'm 58 years old, so I was there) the easiest and cheapest way to change the look of your car was to repaint the wheels. So off to the hardware store you went for a couple cans of whatever was available. I can tell you from experience, black red, white, and probably something akin to royal blue were what you had to chose form. Aluminum, gold and copper maybe. My '51 Ford had red wheels, then black wheels, then royal blue, because thats what was available in small town Oklahoma in 1965. As with a lot of "traditional" stuff, red wheels got started because it was what was available. I like red wheels but on your car I think, given the options you have today (even in spray cans) you could do something to tie in with the original paint a bit better. Long answer to a short question, sorry. GV
