ok,the car is somewhat seafoamgreen, how about painting the roof and wheels dark green? and, yes,I like the red wheels too. wich makes me wonder:why do we think that red wheels do look good?what is it with that combo of black-white-red that makes us feel warm and comfy???
RED wheels look GOOD on old FORD TRACTORS. RED wheels look GOOD on RED CARS. RED wheels look GOOD on little RED WAGONS.
In that car if you really want to be traditional you need to put it up on blocks JUST Kidding. Try a set of thin white walls, Black Rims, and Baby Moon Hub Caps. Put some Curb Feelers and Lakes pipes. Putting a 1930's or 40's tradition on a late 50's car isn't traditional. But if that's what you want to do, just do it. It was also traditional for about 6 months in the mid 60's to paint half your wheel one color and half another color like semi circles ya know it wasn't real pretty but it was traditional.
Red wheels and a little bodywork. If the body is too far gone - find a Ranchero to put the Edsel nose on! Do it man! - Joe
Thenks Joe- That looks good, I already have a couple of "nice" old old cars (my truck and a 67 GTO convertible) , for this one I prefer a bit more (ducking for cover) patina. I have to keep the neighbors on their toes. I think it looks perfect in my driveway compared to my next door neighbor's cars-- a Mercedes SUV and 2008 Prius on one side, and a BMW and Volvo wagon on the other. I think the street needs more rust. (I did put the door molding on, and touched up the rust a bit, however) Not mine:
one of the old guys in the club said that when he was a kid his first car was a realy nice 49-50 merc vert. yellow with red guts if i remeber right. it was almost new. said after hes dad gave it to him the first thing he did was paint the wheels red heat the springs, shave her. and sprayed black primer of the nice yellow paint.... then would cruz around looking for nicer tire's to trade from parked cars. gota love hearing the storys from the oldtimers.
The verdict has been rendered: I also did the rust repair, fixed the trim and got some EDSEL letters Before:
And what are you doing with the Edsel dog dishes??? I'm not complaining, but I would have wider steal wheels, black walls and dog dishes
I have the dog dishes and are keeping them with the stock 14" wheels and blackwall tires. I know it's an eyeful but I like the contrast of the real patina'd 50 year old paint agains the super shiny wheels and tires. If I get sick of the red, they might end up black with spider caps I found a set of used 15" Cokers, got a $25 set of junkyard wheels (from a Bronco II) and the trim rings from the Goodguys swap meet. I also put on some old Mr Gasket chrome dust caps I found at a Pep Boys that was going out of business.
Great looking 36...Black wheels would look good, but the red does too... Got no probs with either, my fronts are Mickey Thompson 5 spokes, rears are 15 X 7 Mopar steelies, painted black because that's what was in the gun at the time....
put-em the way you likem,I like em red or black or what ever look right.Car color doe make a difference
Traditional: Black 40 Standard coupe. Red wheels. Beautiful girl. Pearl necklace. Little black dress. Nuff said...
Paint 'em red. You can change it to another color if the look doesn't do it for ya. Crome reverse would look nice too.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Right now it's all apart waiting for the dropped axle and I'm going back to black wide fives with firestone wide whites. Been apart for a while now, life got in the way. Should be together in a couple a months, I'll be sure to post pic's.
In and around Artesia, Ca. in the early 60's we did black wheels with white walls unless you ran hub caps then it was either red or black. I however really like the red wheel look with white walls and have done it to many of my cars and trucks. Surface rust was a big no no we'd do primer spots before we let rust stay on our cars.
