Refrigeration guys, need some help.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pist-n-Broke, Jan 14, 2005.

  1. I ended up with some coolant due to a phone call from a friend at a garadge sale. I was told there was 3-new 30lb cans and one 15lb can of R-12. A good price, did I want them? I went for it but it wasn't all R-12. What do I have? What is it good for?
    30lb.Racon 502, 30lb. Freon 22, 15lb. Racon 500. I did get one 30lb. Freon R12
Who can help me out with info?

R 22 is for your home AC. Don't know about the rest.

502- med. temp down to -40*F Big bucks $5-600 a 30# can (phase out)
22- Resid. and commercial AC $65 a 30# and going up (phase out)
500- used on commercial ac and some low temp chambers if my memory is any good (phase out) don't know what this is worth. The supply house does not even list anymore
R12- not made in US since 95, can is propably worth $500
Now for a word of caution. You have to have a license to handle refrigerants, buying or selling, There are big time fines for venting this stuff into the air. This is also considered haz materials and your state may vary but in kalifornia if your transporting this stuff you better have a haz material manifest.

    R-500 is a mix of 12 & 22 (so is 502) that Carrier used
in residential small commercial during the 60's. Don't know
how many 30 + yr old a/c's still working.
Be carefull handling the refrigerant, if someone gets a pic
of you mishandling the stuff it's 20k fine and the snitch
get 10k, just like the irs your guilty till you prove your
    not!!!

  5. Thanks guys for the info. I was aware of some rules and reg's. I don't plan on taking it out and playing with it. What I want to do with it is get it to someone that has a use for it. I just wasn't sure where to go for that. You've all been a lot of help. If you know anybody that can use it the price will be right.

I used to use R502 to blow out dirty condensers. Who knew? Give it to your local refrigeration contractor and get it the hell out of your garage.
