For years I ran a Tweety Bird Echo box on my CB in the semi truck. It worked just like the old reverb units, had a spring in it and a slide on top to change the sound. A unique sound, if you ever heard it, you remembered it. My last one finally gave it up a year or two ago. I think they went out of business sometime in the mid 80's when the electronic echo boxes came out. My CB radio guy died a couple of years ago, and I haven't found anybody around that can fix it. Another piece of history lost to technology.

I lived up in Maine and listened to WKBW, it was like listening to an advanced species from another planet as many of us had outhouses and still waiting for electricity. I had no idea what the 'submarine races' entailed that everybody went to but I sure wanted to go to one.

Couple of friends had them back in the 60's
One was a Ply Valiant. The other a 63 Chevy.

These were "spring" type. The sound definitely changed to something weird when going over bumps or RR tracks.

I recall there was a knob that adjusted the amount of reverb. I think all it did was move a contact along the length of the spring, thus changing the amount.

Another friend and I had this crazy idea of taking a tape recorder and placing a play-back head near the recording head. Then either run the looped tape (think 8-track) at differing speeds or adjust the distance between the heads to vary the amount of "reverb"
Never pursued the idea, but others did. Oh well.....

  8. First time I heard and saw one was when a buddy had one installed into his 1962 327" Impala SS 3speed stick convertible.
It was around 1965 and I was mesmerized by it.
Next I spotted some showing up in early and mid year 60's Pontiac full size and some GTO models.
