I had a similar story about a '61 Bel Air back in '88; as I posted five years ago:
"That same year Sherwood Cadillac in Beverly Hills had a near-mint white-over-beige 25k mile '61 Bel Air 2H with a six and Powerglide on their lot; when the price dropped to $4888, I offered my nice '66 Coupe deVille in trade plus cash but they wouldn't go for it. For some reason I kept the ad and wrote down the license number (DIS 246). About a year afterward I spotted it in another ad from some dealer in the Valley, only now it was resale red with a 409 4-speed. I called the dealer and found out it had been consigned as an original, so when I gave him the evidence it wasn't, he got pretty bugged about it (with the consignor, not with me!)."

Just found this thread and thought I'd resurrect it.

I can't find any pix, but my first car was a 1964 Corvair Monza. 110 HP. Four-speed. Bucket seats (I think that they all had buckets).

Eventually I bought a muscle car and sold the Corvair to Dennis (last name withheld) who was in a band. They had a VW van to haul their equipment to gigs. Dennis swapped the Corvair drivetrain into the VW van in order to have almost three times the horsepower in the van. The Corvair got scrapped. What a shame as I'd love to have the car back. The body didn't have a dent or scratch in it, and it was totally complete/driving when I sold it. That was over 50 years ago, though.

My first car was a ‘67 Nova, 283/4 spd. I sold it to a neighborhood guy to buy a ‘70 SS Nova and never saw the car again after he drove it away. Didn’t know him, maybe he was modifying it and never finished it, or maybe he went to Nam and didn’t make it home.

I got my first car in 1964 and it needed a motor and transmission. It has gone through a lot of changes since then. It is the one in my avatar. When I was drafted in 1967, I had hopes that I would be back, so I rented a garage and prepaid to keep it there. Well, I am still here and so is the Plymouth.

    thanks for the storys,fun !
The first broken thing I got with 4 wheels, was taken over by my Dad,as soon as I made it run! He made it into a SCCA H-Mod.
So I don't count that one! I had been building plastic car kits, into cars I'd kind of like for a few years. Taking bits n ideas from car mag,car shows an TV= 77 Sunset Strip was were Norm's "T" was the real star I thought.
My plan was simple, use Jr High to find as many free junked cars, that had parts I though I could use! Out of the parts build as close to my idea of a hotrod as the parts let me! To have a car to drive to Sr High School.
Took the 3 years of Jr High, spair time to get it running,by 1959.< "I count that 28A Hotrod as first"
I loved how it came out. Still have it!
Yet less then 6 months later,I had to face the fact,my 28A roadster hotrod, with no top, open wheel an only a windsheild, was not"Take Girls on dates, type of car". I live in Miami Fla= lot of rain!!! Plus some days, not so great going to school ether.
So had to get a car with a top.roll up windows ,that had tobe cheep. " $75" for a used ruff 50 Henry J.
So car #2,you know when we're teens,we kind do what seems good at that min. !
Didn't take long to fig. I needed to make the "J" look n run better.
Was still doing my part time work at the Paint n Body shop= So learning a lot too.
    Ya,the "J" turned into a full custom.
It all worked out pretty good! Get the girls to go for a ride in Hotrod, meet n talk, then go on dates in "J".
Yup,I had 2 cars in Sr high school ! Cost me a lot of time, but really not much $.
    Auto insur. was the biggest cost to me { No Dad was not going to pay,insur. gas or anything }
He let me build my car stuff out back of house out of site . He could of said "Keep that junk out here" but he let me do it. Thanks Dad. Miami high home coming prade.jpg

I purchased my first car in 1965, just as I was finishing high school. It was a 120k mile Chicago rust bucket. I loved it and kept it for twenty years.

I sold it in 1985, so I could buy a pre-49 rod that I could drive to events all over the USA and Canada.

1964 Impala SS I bought at age 15. Drove it around on my farm permit.
One day the PG refused to be part of the fun. What to do with it?
My Dad was not a "car" guy but he was skilled in the art of barter/trade/haggle and I was a apt student.
A guy in town wanted the 327. What he paid was more than I had in the whole car.
Bucket seats went next. Somebody needed the drivers door glass
Hey now...this is fun and even better it was making money.
In a couple months there wasn't much left so we hauled the hulk to a local scrapyard.
The die was cast.. I was a parts guy.
The cool kids in school had nice cars they spent money on
I drove beaters and made money.
Not much has changed in 50 years.
