My 1st wasn't a hot rod or muscle car but a snap together Kenworth semi and I remember it because my dad got it for me as a surprise and then he sat down with me and helped me put it together!! I loved it!!! I was 6yrs old when he got it for me

The Blue Max was an old MPC model, AMT and MPC have been hooked up for several years.

My first was the 32 Vicky from AMT. It was the first on MANY, I just used the body in the as-molded gray, and painted the fenders and roof center black (like the box). I think I got that kit for my 10th birthday, and my hands were constantly stained with model paint and dried glue for years after that! :D

I think it was AurorA. A '56? Ford sedan Demo Derby car. Blue plastic. The body panels were made to look like it had been hit a few times. Built it when I was around 9 or 10, funny thing... I've been a bodyman/painter for near 30 years.

What a great kit. I turned mine into a slot car. I think there were other similar demo derby models, but I can't remember them. Gary

I sure do ! It was in 1961. A M T and Ford Motor company had teamed up to do a model contest . You went to a Ford dealership, and got a 1961 A M T annual kit FREE !!!!!!!!!!! If you wern't able to drive , uh ya had to bring a parent . In this case , my dad came along . I got a 1961 Ford Thunderbird Convertable . There were already some real nice examples at the dealer where I went , Richmond Motor company . Winners went on to an elimination . I don't know who eventually won . Today , I scratch build service station dioramas :

I was building wooden go carts when I was 7... You know the kind where you to use a rope to steer with?? Me an' the other kids would race going down hill on a "S" shaped road called Barbara Ave.. This was when we were living in N.S.W. Australia.. Fun times back in the day!! :) I didn't build my first kit till '71..

Wish I could use Google Street to see what the old house in Australia looks like.... My p.o.s. pc can't handle it.. The only thing I have is one old b.w. picture of when it was new in '66-'67...

  23. 1956 Eldorado convertible I built on Memorial Day of '56 to resemble my Uncle Lester's new Eldo he drove over with to show me that morning.
His Eldorado even had a car phone in it back in 1956!
Really impressed this young 12 year old kid back then.

Man, I built several of those wooden go karts, with plywood bodies. We lived in San Francisco when I was a kid so there were some killer hills, that went for miles, to run on. I made a steering wheel that attached to a broom handle that the rope wrapped around it. It was about 8 turns, lock to lock. Bad part was pushing the thing back up the hill!!:D

After building many airplanes, boats, and tanks,I discovered hot rods and customs, before you could buy them in kits. I started with modifying a Johan 1956 Pontiac. Then came the Revelle 1/32nd 32 Ford roadster, and coupe(glue coupe top on roadster body). They had solid plastic wheels, bigs and littles, with a flathed engine. Once AMT introduced the 3 in one customizing kits,in 1958 the boom really took off. The AMT 32 roadster was a milestone model, our local hobby shop could not keep them in stock.I still have a lot of my show winning models, and a few of my old trophys.

Nice story... If you can, post some pictures of those old show winners. The models today are built very nice with fantastic detail, but there is something special about the old models of the sixties. The old wood putty for body filler...sewing thread for plug wires...cordaroy fabric for interiors...and all kinds of house hold items to bring those models to life.

Don't remember which one I built first but the most memorable for me was the "Simple Simon" Thames. Now I've got a Thames in 1:1 scale and I'm building the model again with my 5 year old son!
