I have a 1962 261 out of a Canadian Pontiac. I am looking to add a remote bypass oil filter but I am wondering, is the oil return line pressurized or is it gravity fed back into the motor? Reason being is that I am adding a turbo and want to filter the oil going to it. The filter would sit below the turbo, so will the oil flow uphill from the filter to the turbo?
You’re not going to want to do that. Bypass filter works on on principle of brewing coffee in a way. The bypass filter has a restricted flow up to the element and then it’s basically gravity back to the pan. So the filter will only ever have a marginal amount of pressure on the return line once the filter is full after starting.
Unfortunately that's not the answer I wanted to hear, but glad you told me. I guess I'm going to have to figure out something else.
Just use a screen type oil filter in the line to the turbo. You can tee the line for the bypass oil filter.. remember that your turbo needs basically the same type of restriction as a bypass filter.
