Bought this Flatattack oil filter for use on my '50 plymouth, and am wondering about using barbed fittings with rubber line and hose clamps. Will they blow off under pressure? Hydrolic style rubber hoses with pressure fittings would be ideal, but I don't any local shops to fab them. The filter came with barbed fittings (see photo), but wondering about a line blowing off in the desert and pumping all the oil into the street...

    Any thoughts?

  2. I used a set of Earls blue rubber lines on my 50 Plymouth coupe.
    They're rated 250 psi.

The lines are shown in the pic.
The fittings are Earls barbed style and they recommend crimping the red alloy sleeves you see on the outside with a tool that looks very much like a copper tubing roll-cutter, but with flat wheel instead of sharp edged one.

I left them uncrimped as an experiment and they never gave me any trouble.

I'd say as long as the hose you use is a bit difficult to get on the fitting it would work ok with a hose clamp added to it.

Don't use oil to lube the hose/fitting cuz that just makes it easy to slide back off even with a tight hose clamp.
Crude as it sounds, saliva is a good lubricant and once dry it helps hold the hose in place.

    Oil remains forever slippery.

We use worm style hose clamps all the time on Harley's. Even the Harley brand oil cooler kit uses worm style clamps. I wouldn't worry about it.

Go to your local hydrualic shop and get a set of Parker push lock fittings and hose from them. Tim

Don't know why I didn't call my local NAPA dealer sooner, but turns out that they have a complete stock of every type of hydraulic line and fitting you could ever want.

The tricky part was getting the lines to work at the block end, as the 218/230 block supply and return ports are perpendicular to each other, and one right above the other as well. Without a tight 90 degree on the lower port, the hoses run into each other. The smallest hose they had was 1/4", and the smallest flare fitting was also 1/4". The block ports are 1/8" pipe thread, and had 3/16" flare adapters in them for the original filter. I was able to find 1/8" pipe thread to 1/4" flare adapters, one straight, and the other a tight 90 degree, to mate the block to the available pressure fittings. The other end of the hose is 1/4" pipe thread, to fit directly into the filter.

In short, I was able to get the two hoses made in about 15 minutes, for $30.32. Of course they aren't show quality polished and braided stainless, but they come off the bottom of the block behind the distributor, run under the steering and shift linkage, and up into the bottom of the filter. I don't think I'll even be able to see them once everything is back together. And, I don't have to worry about blowing a line off and dumping all the oil in the dirt.

Thanks for all the input and advice, perserverance paid off.

    Pete

Shit, they look good! I'd rather hve black lines than stainless anyway...why accentuate the ugly....The shiny stuff belongs on the mill...stainless lines would just draw attention to themselves...my .02...
