I've seen one hit someone too. Namely me :D

I was pulling the axles on a 60 t-bird. One came right out, but the other side was stuck. I took another ford axle I had laying around and used it to cobble together a slide hammer. Had a piece of thick steel plate that wieghed probably 20#, so I burned a hole thru it and slipped it over the axle for the hammer, and then welded a pipe coupling on the axle to act as a stop for the hammer.

I bolt that contraption up to the bird axle and give it a big slam. Of course, the most convenient place to stand was astraddle of the puller. Axle comes flying out about 50 mph, flange slams into the plate, and rams it into both my shins. I hobbled around like an 80 yr old for a couple days after that stroke of brilliance :D

Ive never had this happen and hadnt considered it happening, but now it will be on my mind every time I pull an axle!
    Thanks for the wake-up call!

Cant do it, the spider gear cross pin would be in the way.

I know a fellow who has false teeth NOW because of the " chain method " :)

He had snatched and pulled on the chain a few times. He got a little closer and ready flipped the chain ... and the axle popped out ... right into his face. He was not the prettiest fellow around before that but with losing his 4 front upper teeth and a few on the bottom ... he definately had not improved his looks.

The Bronco rears ( and 4X4 trucks ) have been the most difficult axles to pull that I have ever had to pull. They get rougher abuse ... in the rocks and mud. Housings get bent also with more frequency

Yep...thet chain kin gitcha. I've used it, though...but never by hand...I fixed the chain to the axle flange, then tied the end to the back bumper of the pickup. Left about 3 feet slack, then drove hell out of the pickup...BANG!!! Out flew thet axle, made a helluve dent in the tailgate...Rightly imprinted a Ford axle in thet script, misspellin' "CHEVPOLET" LOL
That was funny, What??? Hell no, not My PICKUP... The neighbor's! I drive an F100!
