I have seen this done but if you are taller than a fire hydrant you won't have enough leg room. The original seat was designed to go back as far as possible, any car bucket will be thicker in the back and a different shape. It will not fit right or be comfortable.

2 possibilities. Take your stock seat, strip it down, make a notch in the front and reupholster or, modify the stock padding and cover if it has already been redone.

The other is get seats out of a newer pickup that are made to fit snug against the back of the cab.

Another possibility might be to take out the gas tank and put one under the body someplace. This might give you enough room for thicker seats. I see some of the pictures show this has been done.

Just my personal preference but I sure you can engineer a shifter to work with the bench seat..Hell most of us on here engineered our whole car suspension, drivetrain, so a shifter should be no problem..An I also like for the truck to be able to seat 3 people if needed... 5. Here is what my dad did in his 56. He had the interior guy make the slight notch, some cars require more.

I had the shifter mount modified. moved forward 4", & up 1 "

    Clears the bench :)

before & after (with longer shifter handle)
