Removing Chrome from a wheel?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sfm1951, Apr 21, 2013.

  1. Has anyone removed peeling chrome off a aluminum wheel? What would be the best way to remove it. Would you sandblast, bead blast, or any other way without destroying the wheel? Thanks in advance, Steve

the chrome is like "clear" a chrome plating shop can dip it before your eyes and take it off, what you want off is the nickel, then the copper. involves a little more.. call a plater for details..

A few threads on this subject. If you wanna end up with bare metal...or in your case, aluminum...seems that the only way to get the chrome completely off without damage is to take them to a plating company to have 'em stripped. It's the reverse process of putting chrome on.

But if you plan on painting them, you could have them blasted or maybe sand them just to get the flaky edges off and scuff up the remaining chrome, then heavy primer, lots of sanding, more primer and sanding until they're smooth, then paint.

But I gotta think that if the chrome is coming off now, it's gonna keep coming off and eventually ruin the nice paint job.
