Im putting together a disk brake kit on some new spindles and get to installing the bearing adapters, so i searched and found out ways to install bearing adapters to my spindles. but after heating the adapters for 20min in the oven on 400 degrees i put them on and they wouldnt go far enough on. so any ideas on removing them so i can start over.

Sounds like too heavy of an interference fit.

If you are lucky, you can use a gear puller to pull the bushing off.

Been there, be prepared, you "might" be sol. They might be locked on. About the best way, use a torch, propane works), heat the shit out of them and a bearing puller to tug on them. Otherwise you are probably just going to have to split them to get them off and make new ones.

Next time, put the spindles in the freezer, and use 500F.

    They should fall together.

And at least that way if they still don't fit, you KNOW you will have to cut them off. :D

I don't know about removing them but usually I put the spindles in the freezer and heat the adapter in the oven, pull them out immediatly togethe be prepared to whack it if necesary. Usually they drop right on like they were meant. Before heating or cooling first check to see which adapter has the closest matched eaze of fit . I have had a couple that wouldn't go on all the way but a good whack with a pipe and and two pound sledge fixed it right away make sure that you use something that won't mall the adapter. To remove, You might try freezing and then some quick heat to the adapter using a good gear puller and freind, I always rehearse such processes so that I actually only have to do it once, and don't get in a hurry.

Thanks guys, i think i might just end up taking them into shop class with me tomorrow to use the press. Hell, i can add this to my lesson learned list

  10. I took a pair off a couple of months go. Made a tool out of 4" channel. Used a hole saw to make a hole slightly larger than the the shaft of the spindle where the grease seal runs. Then I cut a slot to the hole from one end on the band saw. Put the spindles in the press and they popped off.

It is quite possible they will seat if you set them up in the press. I'd try that before I would take them off to try again.

  11. heating them for 2-3-4 minutes with a propane torch should be enough for them to drop on. if you are stuck halfway , press them on
