I need to remove the tach and speedometer from my 56 T-Bird to get rebuilt. It looks like a bitch to get under the dash. And I am old and stiff. Has anyone done this before on a 55 or 56 Bird. Any pointers or tips to make this easier?

  2. Well, I can't do anything about the old and stiff thing but fully sympathize with you as I'm also a sufferer...LOL

It's a fairly straightforward deal (other than getting under the dash), pull the speedometer cluster first. The cluster is held in with I believe four threaded studs pointing down (3/8" nuts IIRC, may be smaller). You'll have to disconnect the speedo cable first, the assorted wiring can be dealt with once the cluster is loose and part way pulled out. Theoretically you could pull just the speedometer itself, but getting it out without breaking off the plastic needle isn't something I'd try.

Once the cluster is out, you can easily access the tach through the cluster opening. Recommended tools: a 1/4" drive deepwell socket set, a couple of long extensions and maybe a u-joint. Good luck!

That’ll work, but it’s still a bitch under the dash. For that, I’d find a buddy to help me pull the seat out. If the wiring is original, give it a close look. I rewired mine maybe 15 years ago, and the wires were starting to crack the insulation when they were moved. So disconnect the battery, and keep an eye on that.
