OK, I'm pretty ignorant of these 80 year old ******s, but it looks to me that the pinion gear as well as it's bearing should just lift out of this rear banjo housing. It doesn't want to come out, and I don't want to break it. Am I missing something here? (Photos attached) DSCN0194.JPG DSCN0195.JPG

What you don't see is the other opposing tapper roller bearing behind the one in view, those two jam nuts you see set the clearance ( drag) between the two. and hold the pinion shaft in position in a double taper race that is pressed into the banjo housing. the pinion gear bearing race is designed to be removed toward the outside, once the ring gear is removed. This is a quite complicated arrangement, nothing like a modern 3rd member. you should get a book about them or find an online description. Before you just start pushing and pulling on things.

Make a tool that pushes the pinion gear out from the case. Heat banjo to 200 degrees. It will come right out. I need to search to find photo of tool I made.

Here are some photos of those pinion nuts and a `32 pinion shaft/gear. These are the special "Ford" thin wrenches required to loosen and ***emble those nuts to set the bearing clearance. This is a `32 pinion bearing, they don't have the inner support bearing that may require the whole pinion bearing race to be pressed out (forward) to remove the pinion gear.

20170304_155656_resized (1).jpg Why do you want to take it out? You haven't dis***embled the bells yet. Tool I made to push it out.

Do not press against banjo case if you plan to reuse it. Can be pressed out with apparatus fabricated as shown. Ron pull5.JPG

That's a cool tool. I have never had an issue.Pops right out with a little heat. After everything is clean I heat the case and pinion ***embly drops back in place with no help.

OK, I think I got it....... First remove the bells, axles, and the ring gear. Then remove the nuts on the pinion gear shaft and PUSH it INTO the banjo, Not pull it out as I was going to do? Any trick to removing the bells and axles?

Once you get the rear hubs off, the bells unbolt from the banjo center section and slide off the axles. The ring gear can remain on the axles and pull out with the left side axle, you can leave the right bell on. I don't think you can push the pinion & shaft to the inside, since the latter style ( after `32) has a rear pinion bearing support in the way, so it must be pushed out forward like "AngleDrive" and "seabeecmc" have described.

No, No, You can't push it into the banjo. You need to do some thread research on how to dis***emble these rear ends. And also the re***embly.

No need to remove nuts. Just push pinion, bearings and all out of banjo. With my device I've never had the need for heat. Ron
