On a 40 ford rear end, trying to remove the torque tube from the axle. Do the pins need to be drilled out, or can you hit them out with a punch? figured i'd ask before i ruin something.

To remove the drive shaft, yes you need to drill the end on the coupler pin and punch it out. The torque tube will come off after you remove the snap ring and speedo drive gear. Do a search its been covered plenty for more details

Grind or drill away one head of the pin, pound out WITH something as an anvil solidly supporting the area. Any pounding that reaches the pinion bearings will be regretted.
Pins are pretty hard...my technique for installing...they come with one end formed, other straight...is to centerpunch (which makes only a slight impression) and add a few punch marks around that as starting points. SOLIDLY supprt formed head while delivering a lengthy rain of medium blows and it will slowly form a head.
