I bought a 46-48 (not sure of the exact year) flathead that had the transmission still on it. Well, I'm trying to get the transmission off. What do I have to do to get it off? Shouldn't I be able to just unbolt it and pull it straight off? The only manual transmissions I've ever removed have been in semis and the last one I did was many months ago.

I unbolted the transmission and can only rock it back and forth and open a gap of about 1/4" between the transmission and the block. I removed the inspection plate and peeked inside and it's pretty rusty in there. Do you suppose the input shaft has rusted itself in there? I can put a wrench on the release arm and move it back and forth about 1/2" while looking inside the inspection hole and I can see the clutch fork moving but nothing else moves.

What should I do? Spray a bunch of PB Blaster or equivelant in there and keep trying to pull it off?

Input shaft probably rusted in clutch disc....Spray some Liquid Wrench thru
inspection hole .aim at the splines where shaft enters disc...Pry out a little.push back in..pry out some more push back in ,repeat as necessary....Thats the only thing that can be holding it....

Bigger wrench on the flats on release shaft...you are only moving it through its free play right now, if you can move it some more it should tear itself loose. You might also consider making about 6 wooden wedges, placing them all around, and tapping them in VERY slowly and going around keeping them perfectly even so you don't crack bell.

I tryed prying on between the case and block and looking inside the inspection hole. I can see the clutch disk flexing as I pry on the case so I think that the input is rusted to the clutch disk. I've sprayed a whole bunch of liquid wrench in there hoping that it'll free it up. I'll keep working at it and try the wooden block idea.

    Thanks for the advice.
