I would love to see that scrap book, my father is Jim Hurley, one of the Renegades. We had a Renegades reunion at the NHRA museum last year and just got word from Ron and Harold that we are getting together on the 11th of April. Is the scrap book going to be at that get together?

15. Hello Bob,

Today I met with 6 of the surviving members of the Renegades Long Beach to discuss all that is happening with the Long Beach Motorama. All the members are thrilled that the show is coming back and have vowed to be on hand in club jackets; just like the first ones first used during the late 40’s. So if you know of anyone making wool jackets I need to talk with them about creating the new jacket for the club that are exact duplicates to retain authenticity, 1 remains in existence for a sample.

They also have agreed that I make the Renegades Club plaque the “Official” casted dash plaque (business card size). The guys that have a collection, are going to let me reproduce their extensive collection of photos and such for the continuous historical display that will be part of the show in the lobby. The members have also agreed to include in the Motorama a “Renegades Pick Award”, that they will pick and award themselves during the Ceremonies.

Lastly, they have agreed to let me resurrect the club into a modern example of what they started so long ago. This for me is one of the highest honors that has ever been bestowed upon me and am greatly humbled. At least now when I wear the jacket for a photo some asshole won’t be able to jump down on my neck on a open forum, even though he stood 6’ from me without saying a word.

Below is a couple of things I have transcribed from the original 59-60 show programs and from a member.

Attached are a couple of photos from today to post as well. Thank you for supporting my passion and for releasing this information on the H.A.M.B.
I respect that they don’t want producers-promoters on their selling their wares. But I know they would like to know.

ED COUSINS, President
The Renegades of Long Beach, Inc.

The Renegades Car Club of Long Beach was first organized in 1941, by five young men who desired something more from an automobile than mere transportation. It was the consensus of opinion of these five that a car club should be directed toward the improvement of the safety, beauty, and performance of their machines.
As with any small group who has a different perspective, these boys were labeled by others, Renegades. These young knights literally tore a page from the Book of the King Arthur to form their Round Table of Renegade Knights.
Not to many months after the organization of the Renegades, they were disbanded by a call for help from “Uncle Sam.”
After the troubled war years passed, three of the original five members once again banded together, and since that time, their dream has grown into a vivid reality. The Renegades have been featured in virtually every magazine dealing with automotive organizations. Their machines have appeared on the covers of literally every Rod & Custom Magazine and have won their owners many awards including Best in Class -- Awards of Elegance -- and Sweepstakes presentations.
Many a distraught motorist in trouble along our busy highways or city streets have been quickly and efficiently assisted by a Renegade Knight who when finished fulfilling his obligation to his fellow traveler, drove away without expecting so much as a “thank you” for his assistance. By deeds such as this the Renegades have been able to preserve the meaning of their motto, “Helpfulness is Friendliness”.
Renegades have made their organization available to virtually any charitable project and have supported both physically and financially the campaigns of the March of Dimes – City of Hope – and the Exceptional Children Foundation, to name a few. Even the periodical visitation to the Red Cross Blood Bank is one of their services.
On the other hand, many a producer of car shows throughout the West have been saved from sure financial disaster by the participation of these Renegade Knights and their automobiles. Not many months ago, a group of 18 members caravanned over 300 miles with 11 show cars in tow to help a friend in need without thought of compensation.
The Renegades Car Club of Long Beach was incorporated as a California non-profit organization, February 5, 1958. Just one year later in the February issue of Car Craft Magazine, Renegades were named over hundreds of other clubs throughout America, “Car Club of the Year, 1958.” We’re justly proud of our achievement and in no way will any member willingly be accountable for a deed which would jeopardize our club’s reputation.
Membership in the Renegades requires ownership of a custom (modified) automobile in show condition; a driving record free of accidents and traffic violations.
They subscribe wholeheartedly to the adage, that life is the most precious possession on earth, drive your car at all times in a manner which will safeguard it.

~As stated in 1960 event program by Harold Johnson-Renegades C/C Pres. ~

Here you will find hand-formed Kustoms, hand built Hot Rods and hand-made sports cars. These unique machines offer the finished product of many painstaking hours and individual ideas of their creators.. These creators of "personalized cars" are the automotive pioneers of today. They have turned away from the dull pattern of uniformity and conformity, seeking that personal expression of individuality which burns deep within almost every man, woman and child. These non-conformists have used the automobile as their instrument for personal expression and in doing so they present the true "Classic" cars of today. Some ideas may appear fantastic, others may seem sensible, but, practical or impractical, the ideas developed on each car are the magnificent expression of an individual.

A little History about the RENEGADES OF LONG BEACH
By: Harold Johnson Club President 1960

When I was in High School attending Poly High in 1953 in Long Beach, I remember a 1946 Ford Club Coupe owned by Delvin Cain with a Renegades plaque that attended Poly High School also, I had a 1941 Ford Coupe but it was not worthy of being a member at that time. It was not until I had a car that was worthwhile of being in the club that was I asked out to become a member in 1954. We had meetings every Sunday evening in a garage that had been converted into the club house. The meetings were conducted by the president; we had a secretary; and a master of arms to fine any unruly members. We went over what was happening and any future car shows or events that we could attend that were coming up. If a show was coming up we would all met at the Clock Drive-In and caravanned to the show, fun was had by all, at the end we received our trophies and caravanned home. The Renegades conducted many events, such as car shows, picnics, poker runs and other events. One I remember was a Poker Run that ended at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium which we had rented so we could have a Dance after the run, we had hired a band and after all had finished the run, and then we handed out the trophies. Then in 1957 we started planning the ROD & CUSTOM MOTORAMA Which was to be held at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in 1958; we had three shows there 1958, 1959 & 1960. We had a great turn out by participants and 10,000 guests. The IRS got involved as we were not a nonprofit organization and we decided to cancel the 1961 show and all future shows. I had just married and I dropped out of the club in 1961 and lost contact as I moved to Orange County. I stayed in contact with a few of the members, Ron Guidry and I got together and had a reunion in November 2008 at NHRA Museum; we had a good turnout, with about 25 of the old members attending. We had a catered dinner and Greg Sharp the head of the NHRA museum had gathered a lot of slides and put on a slide show, he also blew up the magazine article where the Renegades had won the CAR CRAFT Car Club of the year Award in February 1959 Issue.

"Today I met with 6 of the surviving members of the Renegades Long Beach to discuss all that is happening with the Long Beach Motorama".

Hey Bob,

Do you have the names of all the members in the pictures? They are like rockstars to me, and I sure would like to know who is who.

Thanks!

18. Let me contact my friend then i'll post them...

19. So what does that mean Bob ?? So now he wont be questioned if he has a jacket on ? Why is that ?

20. Yep! They are gonna re-start the Renegades club, and told him he would be a member. I told him to contact John Denich, cause we were just talking about this a week or so ago. John would be perfect to get it rolling.

21. Thats very cool, im always into people bringing stuff from the past back, when they do it right. So im wondering what custom does your friend Trace have? It says in that letter that you posted up that the members must have a custom in show condition.Im just wondering what customs are going to be in the new Renegades club.

22. I'm sure he would just be an honorary member, for getting this done. But,you never know...he might find himself a cool Custom!
No chance for me! My Merc will never be "Show Quality". It's just a driver...
