I'm looking into renting a trailer in the next week or so to haul a c-10 pick up 4 hours from Kentucky to Dayton. Does anyone have a suggestion on who has the best rates. It should be a 1 day deal and gas is gonna beat me up enough...I don't want to use a dolly so any suggestions or anyone in the area who wants to volunteer would be appreciated! I'll be towing in with an 03 Chevy 2500 HD
I've used U haul trailers several times and the price is pretty decent if you take it back to the same dealer you picked it up at. They shouldn't have any issues with you towing A C10 on it behind the 2500 hd. Sometimes you can find a local equipment rental outfit that rents out car trailers but the rub there is that if you loose a wheel bearing or tire you might be stuck while you can usually call Uhaul and get another trailer if you have trouble with theirs. Plus theirs have the chains and tie downs on them and you don't have to worry about that part of it.
I work at a rental store. If you find a rental store that does their maintenance right and often you shouldn't have any problems. I haven't had to go rescue anyone in over 3 years. We send tiedowns with it.
I've used U-Haul Car Transports (trailer). They are a heavy though and around here, they charged $75 a day. They also check a book to see what their trailers will hold. I always tell them it's a Honda Civic even though it was a Chevy Biscayne. Seems if they can't find it in their book, they don't want to rent you the trailer.
I rented a U-Haul a few years ago. The tie downs are built into the trailer and they use a surge brake so all you'll need is trailer light hook up. I had some issues because they gave me a POS trailer that needed work. I had shorts in the electrical and brakes that pulled to the right under hard braking. When I mentioned it afterwards, the manager of the place was a real jerk.... But that's another story. Lesson learned was to look over the trailer before leaving the lot. If it looks beat up, demand another one. I wish I had. That said, I'd rent one from U-Haul in a heartbeat if I needed one.
I used a u-haul for my 47 sedan behind a v6 dodge with no issues. 55$ sounds right. was a well maintained trailer.
no man...I know about U-haul but I wanted peoples opinions, there are lots of great resources here on the HAMB, and I'd hate to find out there was a dude in Cinci with a rental place that could use the buisness, when I gave it to U-haul!
I recently went down to Phoniex to pick up a 71 Coronet wagon we bought, left my trailer at home because the car "ran great". It did, for 15 miles. Ended up with a U-Haul trailer. I was surprised the trailer wasn't much more then a dollie, definately worth the extra $$. Went thru hoops because the size of the car even though I had a Mega cab duelly to pull it with. Ended up costing around $125 one way from Phoniex to Albuquerque, thought that was way resonable but that was the worst pulling trailer I've pulled in years, a real tail wagger. Anything over 65 mph was white knuckle, even in my duelly. Might of been even thou I had the bigger of the 2 they offer that wagon hung off the back quite a bit, might of needed more tounge weight. An S-10 shouldn't be as big an issue.
No matter who you use you should buy some ratchet tie downs and bring chains and some nuts & bolts. A friend rented a U-haul after they wouldn't rent him a dolly he was moving a 94 full size 2dr blazer. He took the trailer and when he picked up the truck discovered that the bolted on tie downs would not fit over the wheels. Just be prepared for anything and remember "Murphy's Law" Pat
I used u haul a bunch of years ago and it was $49 a day but you need to tell them it's something light, like a civic or I used a '65 mustang 6 cyl. Towed with a '94 1/2 ton 385 miles
We don't own a trailer because of the " where to keep it when not using it thing" so we simply rent a U Haul transporter when we need one. All the ones we have gotten (and we have probably rented 30 of them) have been in good condition and have everything you need to secure the car down the right way. They are overbuilt but I guess they need to be, considering they are for rental use. Two ways to do it: You can rent it by the day if you plan on coming back to the same location. Sometimes that works out cheaper. Or, you can rent it one way if you are not bringing the towed vehicle back with you. For example we have used one to take a car to the upholstery shop 70 miles from home, so we just rented it for the day. The rate is something like $ 55 a day plus insurance of about $ 9 or so, which we always take because it covers everything and I don't feel like buying U Haul a new trailer if one gets damaged. And yes, tell them you are hauling a light car as they might balk at someone hauling a big SUV on one. Don
Wonder if the insurance would cover it if you tell them you are hauling a civic and have an accident with a big suv on it. I have rented them twice to carry a 39 buick and a 50 chevy 3/4 ton. When I did it for the buick they had to call to get the ok as it was not in their computer- took 2 minutes. The truck was not a problem, though I am not sure I told them 3/4 ton or just 50 chevy pu. Jim
That is a good point.....frankly, I don't know the answer. But mainly I am just getting the insurance to cover their trailer if it is stolen or damaged while in my possession. We have always hauled light cars like model a's so the weight has not been an issue. Don
Brakes? ... you got a controller? ... that would be my big concern, and of course you need a electrical tail on your pickup .... personally I would find a friend with a trailer and offer him what I would give u-haul .... dont mooch though, it aint right.
No, the U haul transporters have surge brakes, so no electrical hookup is needed, just a suitable hitch and a 2 inch ball. Don
All good advise...The only trailer I have access to is not one I want to drag 4 hours away through the hills of Kentucky. If it blew out a tire, not only could I be endangering my new truck, myself and everyone else on the road, but the tire would cost me more than the rental! That being said if anyone in the area wants to get involved I don't mind giving them the money!
Be sure to beat it like a red headed step child, And not repair it, or offer to pay for repairs,... Cause that's what people do to mine when I let them use it for free,.. I guess it must be some kind trailer usage protocol......
Very few people are going to loan or rent you their personal trailer for the reasons Harms Way mentioned. Even close friends would be reluctant because of the liabilty and the investment they have in their trailers. I loaned my utility trailer to some friends to move with and it came back with a bent tongue and missing spare tire. Guess what I don't loan out any more? So much can happen enroute, just make it easy on yourself and lay out the bucks to rent one from U Haul. Their trailers are generally well maintained and if a tire blows they will take care of it for you, unlike if you borrow one from a friend. Don
Comes under the heading "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"....... I won't loan my trailer to ANYBODY anymore.........did that once for a close friend, who knows equipment well, it came back damaged........if they are a good enough friend I happily will haul the load for them. Ray
I've helped my buddy fix his trailer a couple of times when he has loaned it out and it came back beat up. I buy his gas, Pepsi and lunch and get him to do the driving when I need to go get something but sometimes that costs more than renting a trailer and towing it myself as his truck drinks gas faster than a bar fly can put away shots of Jack.
I don't like trailers with surge brakes. If the trailer starts to wander, hitting electric brakes will bring it back in line. You don't want to hit the brakes on the tow rig if a trailer wanders because it can increase the oscillation.
just rented a trailer from u-haul last month. $71 a day including insurance - case something happens to it, i could just walk away. no sore feelings from a buddy if i borrowed his. they tow great. have hydraulic brakes, just need 4 pin wiring and a 2" ball....jack
Cant beat U haul for the price , I paid one fee and it was for three days and drop the trailer at any U haul rental facility.
In my experience, an otherwise sound trailer only "wants to wander" when it is loaded improperly.......weight distribution.....not enough tongue weight is the most common cause. I have a small two wheel trailer (7' deck) and used it to haul a motorcycle a long distance. Soon realized the the trailer needed more weight up front with no easy option for changing the M/C's position. Went to a Home Depot and bought two sacks of Sakrete for $7 and put them up front. Problem solved! Ray
