Replace 51 Olds rear shocks ?

Looking at the way the original shocks are mounted, looks like they may be stabilizing fore and aft movement of the housing, or am I just reading to much into it ?

Would appear that making some brackets off the frame and on the housing would be pretty straight forward, but I'm hesitant to take the originals off without seeking some advice of all the brainpower here, thx.
