Need to locate a good subs***ute split back for a 36 Ford 5 window. Rather not use a new production unit. Looking more for a salvage piece that can be rebuilt. Thanks. Kep
I feel like I'm being set up. Kind of like that joke where your friend makes you ask "what is a ****fer"?
Fellas, give the man your great wisdom and insight, along with what has worked for you, to replace the front seat in his coupe. Please. If that isn't the question then add one more to the count that ain't got a clue!! All the best, Al
This sounds good. I don't think he will respond. I was thinking front seat for a Tudor. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I never thought of that. He must be asking about a seat...duh. I don't know of one. Maybe also post this in the cl***ifieds, but be sure to use the word "seat" for dummies like me. If you are willing to use some other kind of seat, I used '64 Galaxie XL bucket seats in my '40 coupe and am very happy with the look and the fit. They have a steel curved back with polished aluminum trim, and fold down forward all the way to flat. It's the same seat Ford used in the T-birds for a few years.
I used some new take-out bucket seats from a 2001 Regal w/ bucket seat sedan, heated, power and leather. 21.5" wide. Sooo comfortable. This was a few years ago when you could buy proving ground interiors from air bag tested and deployed GM vehicles in upstate New York. Fit my '36 coupe perfectly.
I can not believe no one who posted knows what a split back set is,just look at any 2 door with a bench seat and you will see what one is. Are you wanting to stay period or go with something slightly newer.
Well Jeff,I have never heard of a front seat being called a split back...a bench seat or a 2 door sedan seat is what we call them in the South. I don't think the other guys knew the terminology ether, but why would a guy need a seat like that for a coupe? HRP
I didn't think there would be anything to access in a '36 coupe behind the seat??? But, if you want access, the center seat in a mini-van is fairly narrow and also folds forward. Have one ion my cabrio.
Folks make up their own words for things everyday. The post is so ambiguous it could mean a lot of things but a seat would be the last on my list
You got that right, just interjecting the word "SEAT" and everyone would have known what the OP was talking about. HRP
Build split back frames all the time! There is no other name for that style of seat? So I guess a tapered split back makes no since either? Or for that matter a Square Split Back? As to your question you only have about 47 inches across the back top of the seat and a few inches less at the base across the front. Split back bench seats started showing up much later in wider cars. Finding a split back bench close is going to be near impossible I would think. The early split backs in the 40ish Chevys are serious tonnage and once looking them over I think they would be near impossible to narrow. Keep in mind if you narrow the base both backs need to be re adjusted... Lots of work! I'm not familiar with a lot of the early imports but I think I'd be looking at maybe some of the early Volvo's and European Models? What ever that is worth... I hope you post up what you end up with as I am very curious as to what fits as well. Good luck
I seen on here where someone used a rear seat from a dodge caravan. I personally didn't care for the look, but you could start with something like that. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If you are indeed looking for a front seat with a "split back" your best bet might be a frame from one of the aftermarket suppliers. The front bench seats from first generation Olds Toronados have a nice shape to the lean backs and the frame could be narrowed pretty easily but parts for those rigs command collector car parts prices now if you could even find one.
my `36 3-window has a "split back" seat from what i was told is a `38 ford coupe....that was the story when i bought it at a swap meet for $25
