So, this is probably common knowledge to lots of you guys, but it has been a long time since I have replaced carpet in an old car, so I am wondering who might make carpet that fits right for our cars? My car is a 56 2 door sedan and still has the original carpet that really needs replaced as I am planning to redo the seats, headliner, etc. this winter. Any suggestions on factory type carpet from a reputable supplier? I know there are lots of choices it seems but not all products are the same…. Thanks for any help.
Edit; reading some reviews about Stockinteriors and ACC. All bad, nightmares really. I’ll keep an eye on this thread for recommendations. Otherwise I’ll check the local upholsterers. Stockinteriors.com has a great website with lots of options regarding colors and grade material. I can’t vouch for their quality yet but other HAMBers have recommended them in the past.
Stock Interiors is a joke, I live about 40 miles from their location, which is a postal mail box in Seneca, South Carolina. There is no one there,so they must be somewhere else and use the mail box to take orders, certainly not a show room. HRP
This company advertises on Old Cars Weekly. I did contact them and spoke with the owner on the phone. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about but can't be positive. He did send me carpet and headliner samples even though I told him I was months away from needing to make a purchase. Might be worth contacting them but no guarantees. If you look at google maps - 273 Applewood Center Pl Seneca, SC 29678 you will see the UPS Store, the owner may be in Seneca but I spent several days trying to get the carpet and headliner for our wagon, I went on down the road. HRP
When I got in touch with Quality Carpet it was for carpet and a headliner for my '54 Ranch Wagon. They seemed to understand what a Ranch Wagon was and not the same as a car. But again, who knows for sure about the quality, etc.
Stock Interiors looks to be using images from OC Auto Carpets website. https://www.ocautocarpets.com/product/3408/1955-1956-ford-customline-2dr-sedan/ I haven't yet purchased my carpet but this is where I am leaning towards unless this thread changes my mind.
Lots of good discussion here. Hopefully this may be a thread that we can refer back to as well once we get some more information. Whatever I decide on, I promise to report back. Thanks guys!
Check around with any local upholstery shops and see how much they'd want to install higher end carpet for you. A pro would cut it from a roll, steam it in and make it all glued and tight as a drum. Just had my '54 done and he installed cut pile carpet instead of the loop that most manufacturers sell. It looks great and it's really soft and plush. Couldn't be happier! Don't know exactly how much the individual carpet cost but he did the complete interior top to bottom for $4500 and that's here in the expensive SF Bay Area. I imagine Oklahoma would be waaay cheaper.
Evintho looks great reasonable. I was quote near 2400 from a small LA shop same top to bottom. He broke it down and the carpet quote seems high vs the other things. But always worth checking small shops. I ended getting the 204.00 ACC carpet and an extra 99.00 for the mats. The carpet is 80/20 loop with the heavy jute under. Just have to find time to install it. The headliner I got from cl***icautotrimnv on eBay it was 200.00 shipped. I love to torture myself installing headliners. Also on this one I was making custom windlace like the original style tubing. So I wanted to do it myself.
I got a quote on doing my seats and headliner recently from a friend that does interior. He said $600 installed for the headliner and $1500ish to recover the seats. I just figured I could do the carpet. We will see.
I bought carpet from OC Auto for my 1965 Falcon wagon 6 years ago and it was okay and seemed good for the price. The only issue I had was my wagon had a 4 speed and used the factory transmission extra hump for the shifter out of a 1965 Ranchero. The Ranchero could be ordered from the factory with a 4 speed but the wagon could not. So what I needed was the front half for a Ranchero and the back half for a wagon. Finally just went with carpet for a wagon and pounded the **** out of it to make it go in around the shifter hump and it worked. Mark
For my front bench and rear seat and arm rest done for about 750 in DTLA. Was a great deal. Ok for my ride too.
I purchased an off the shelf listing from ACC for my 1955 Ford Club Sedan. Horrible fit to an otherwise common car. My website has a blog post about it here: https://www.hotrodreverend.com/post/2018/05/07/1955-ford-part-49-carpet-installation The jute insulation was very good and fit extremely well. The carpet was another story - you can see from my write-up and the photos I was not too happy and had to do quite a bit to bring the fitment to an acceptable level. The 80/20 pile is just fine, however. I have no issues with color or quality of the carpet itself. The large pieces they had sewn together were just not done very well. This was just about 5 years ago. Who knows? Maybe ACC has upped their game? FYI - if you look at the OC Auto pages you will see they are indeed Auto Custom Carpet.
This has been in the "Sticky FAQ" and his site has a lot of great How-To info. https://jefflilly.com/build-tips/carpet-installation Be sure to look over some more here. https://jefflilly.com/build-tips
This came up when I Googled it locally, https://www.ocautocarpets.com/our-manufacturers/ Since the phone # is a no location toll free number, who knows where the locations might be You might want to look up that BBB ratings of those suppliers.
The ACC carpet in my car was about 3/4" too narrow across the kick panels. I split the difference and shot some black paint on the gaps on the floor pan. This is a case of one size fits most.
Saw someone post this place on the main board on a similar thread. Anyone tried them? https://www.miamicorp.com/
Thanks so much for the do***entation Daniel! That helps a lot as far as knowing the issues you had with ACC.
Stock Interiors,ACC, and OC are all the same carpet. I think Stock Interiors is the manufacturer. As far as fit. I'd call it driver quality. I put it in my wagon and I'm ok with it.
ACC only one that makes a carpet for your vehicle. It won't fit well and is not molded. All companies that sell it gets it from ACC as stated before. You have two choices. Buy it or buy yards of carpet from them also and cut to fit. I bought mine for my 59 from stock interior. It was cut wrong and they had a new one out in a few days from ACC.
I’ve never bought “ready made” carpet. I’ve only had it custom sewn only because it wasn’t available. I wonder if using a hair dryer would help shape it better.
maybe a rubber mallet on the warm day My 64 wagon used a pre-made one and I had to make some relieve cuts to make it go in the wells ok. I did get an extra matching yard of fabric to cover under and some areas carpet set might fall short on.
