I've been pondering what to replace my rusted out center x-frame. Either build a new one, or just box the frame rails in and add a few crossmembers. Another idea was to put a K member in the back along with a trans crossmember with some supports to the top of the frame. Maybe just box in the middle of the frame? I threw some ideas on a pic of my frame just to give an idea of what i'm thinking. I already have alot of time on this frame for my suspension upgrade and built in side mounts.
I made mine out of flat plate and strap. Triangulated with some tubing. There are pics in my albums and build thread. I'm on my phone right now so I can't post pics.
Why not just weld up the old one, or if it is real bad get anouther and weld it in, might be an idea to box it where needed As for the k-member, they cost stupid money and are really not worth it
If you're working on an old Ford a cheap source of a K-member is a '48-'52 Ford pickup. If it is too narrow fabricate extensions for both sides or cut up another for material. easy to find, cheap and have pedals if you want to use them.
The old x member is long gone. The stuff I have outlined in red I have the material and was going to build that myself. This seemed easier than trying to make a complete new x-frame and still be as strong or stronger than the x ? Plus without the x the exhaust with the underseat heater would be easier to run, trans would be easier to mount etc...
