So I've never replaced glass before, and I've got to put new glass in the driver's side door of my 53 Customline. Does anyone have any pointers for me? The door skins are already off so I can reach under if I have to. Does the glass just fit right in down the slot? It can't be that easy.

    Thanks.

Usually it's not that easy. You might need to remove the vent window assembly, and maybe some other parts. Factory shop manuals come in real handy for this kind of work.

Damn, I wish I had the shop manual.

    Thanks.

I have a 54, in fact I just had my side glass done and waiting to go in. To get it out on my model, not sure if it is the same, you have to drop the regulator assembly and loosen the Vent Window frame to get enough space to pull the glass out. Let me clarify, that is because the rubber which holds the glass in the assemblly was AZ dry rotted so I had to have the whole thing out of the car to remove the glass.

I hope it helps. Oh yeah, only do one side at a time, that way you have a reference point to put it back together.

It's not too bad. I've got a 53 Merc and what I did was just unscrew the vent window assembly from the door and jimmy-it out of the door- but not entirely. Once I got enough room for the old glass to come out and new glass in- voila! Ready for drive in platters.

I've done it plenty of times.

Remove the screws that hold the vent window in (located at the top of the door) where the door rubber runs - these could be hiding under the rubber. The window slides up and down in a channel which is in 2 pieces. They join at the top corner of the vent window, with one running straight down in a steel channel and the other piece runs across the top to the rear of the door and follows down the rear edge to the bottom, also in a channel. These are both located with threaded bolts at the bottoms.

Remove these bolts and like the droog said, unbolt the window regulator bolts and slide down. There should also be a small right angle piece inside the bottom of the door located by 2 bolts which needs to be taken off (stops the window sliding down too far). There's a channel at the bottom of the glass that the rollers from the regulator move in and now it's all loose you can slide them out to one side.

Now reef on the vent window to loosen it up and you should be able to pull the glass out of the channel it slides in and up through the gap at the top of the door.Easy:eek:

PM me if you're still stuck.
