Does anybody make a poly fuel tank specifically for 52-54 cars??? I am pretty sure I need a new one and I'd rather get one that won't explode if I bottom out on the air ride. If anyone can point me towards a good company or source, that'd be awesome.
I wish I had a link to refer you too but I'll give you a general idea what was done, measure the dimensions of your stock tank then check out your nearest Pic-A-Part and check out some of the later Broncos and SUV's that used a poly tank if you find one that is close you will cut out the trunk floor just enough to accomidate the new tank add about 3-4" of sheet metal around the the section you cut out so the new tank will be moved up higher for clearance, then refinish.
If its the same as a 55 or 56 there is a company in Minnesota that also sells windows that is the cheapest so far,I will have to look up their info as I dont know where I put it.
I think it's Toms Cl***ics in Minnesota but I dont' have his contact info readily available either. He sells a lot of stuff on ebay, his handle is tomscl***ic. I don't know if he has poly replacement tanks but I got my repop steel tank and several other pieces from him for my '56. His prices were best I could find. Ron
Well you might want to rethink the poly tank idea, read this entire link and all the posts.www.clubhotrod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45644
Cool...thanks for the info, everyone! Too bad about the ethanol/poly tank thing...If I drop it with bags and the metal one hits the ground...game over. Looks like my only option will be a fuel cell, which screws up the trunk space and just plain ****s for a kustom.
Danny: As little as I am into air ride systems, I think a fuel cell in the trunk is a forgiveable sin when it comes to safety vs. appearance. Many modern customs seem to go with the fuel cell option, so many that it almost seems normal in a well-engineered frame-layer. I will never understand the need to drop a car to the ground when you park it, but if that is what spins your prop, at least do it safely.
I don't wanna have it drop all the way to the ground...just going for a driveable tail-dragger. The roads in Texas aren't exactly the best. :0) Still worried about the tank bottoming out though. If I ever get around to building a 60's style car it'll lay frame, but not this one.
