Been thinking about changing the steel wheels on my A roadster to a set of hot rod wire wheels from either Vintique or Coker. Does anyone have any experience with this type of wire wheels? Good or bad, do they stay round, will they balance? The ones from Vintique are a lot less expensive than the ones from Coker.
Back in the 80's I got a set of chrome wires from McLean wheels and they were of excellent quality except for one little thing, one spoke on a rear wheel was apparently just polished and not chromed and for the time I had the car I always had one rusty spoke.
I’m not sure what you mean by hot rod wire wheels, but I’ve had a set of KH from a 62 or so ‘bird, and a set of 50’s era Chrysler repops. Some require tubes, some don’t. Never had any problem with balance or run out, but I didn't race them or hit things. ***** to keep clean in the seattle rain.
I had a set of Appliance Wires on a 40 Ford sedan for several years and sold them to a friend that put them on his T bird, they looked great the last time I saw the car, about a year ago and they were purchased in 1972. HRP
My son's Model A coupe (see my avatar) ran McLean wires for 30 years without any issues. replaced them with 5-spoke Americans, put the wires in storage in his shop for use again in the future.
You need a really narrow axle if you run full fenders. The narrow ones don't have much backspace because of the way the mounting plate is made.
I got mine from Coker. Very happy with them. Nice and round, no run out and I ran tubeless tires without problems. I'd recommend them.
