Rolf, Based on your comment early in this thread regarding the automatic transmission, I assume you will change over to a manual. What manual transmission will you be using? I am curious because I have a 1956 Olds 324 engine with original cast iron hydromatic behind it and want to go to a manual transmission in my 33 ford Pickup project.
Well, I would consider a Bentsen bellhousing and a T5 five speed, or if the budget can handle it, a Tremec TKO.
Hey Rolf: One of the super nice aspects of the Tremec TKO is that you can have it switched over to a mid-shift setup, which puts the shifter pretty dang close to where it really needs to be. I had mine switched over from the standard rear shift to mid-shift. It is not installed in the car as of yet, if you need any measurements or pictures, drop me a PM.
Amen to that ! ...and the OD gear does not hurt either with $4.00 / gal (and counting) fuel cost;-) Thanks for offering info, I may take you up on that when that it's time.
Tremec TKO = $3k + $3k/$4/gal = 750 gallons of gas How far would you have to drive in 5th gear to recoup 750 gallons?
At 16 mpg, that would be 12,000 miles. So if you're someone like Hotrodladycrusr, then about 6 months.
There you have it !! ...and who would not want to be like Denise?? Besides, if I can avoid sending more money than needed to folks that hate us...why not?
Nah...750gal is the total fuel burn for 12000 miles. What I'm asking is how many miles would you have to drive to break even on the tranny investment ($3000) assuming gas costs $4/gal. Lets say the OD earns you 4mpg. You were getting 12mpg and you now get 16 mpg because of the 5th gear. 36000mi/12mpg = 3000 gallons 36000mi/16mpg = 2250 gallons Delta = 750gallons So you'd have to drive 36k miles to get your money back in fuel savings.
But, when he gets done not burning the extra gasoline, he will still have the transmission. Whereas if he just burns the gasoline, he has nothing to show for it - except perhaps extra wear on the engine from running higher rpms all that time. -Dave
Not arguing your math, I am just saying there is a "good feeling" value to fuel savings and that is hard to put a price on. If for example this '32 becomes my daily I would not be opposed to put a smaller engine in it in the future. We will see...
Thanks Brootal, good to hear from you. I am healing up well from the back surgery but I can't do anything heavy duty for a few months, but I managed to get the caps installed. If you have ever tried to fill the text on a cap like this with a small brush you know there must be a better way. There is...This enamel DecoColor pen from the art supply shop make it easy to fill in the letters. Just follow the edges with consistent pressure and it comes out great. Also, as you can see, the cap is "clocked" perfectly and the same goes for the front. The key is to make the same amount of left and right turn when driving and they will always be perfect. Really ! It is amazing how much a set of caps changes the look and feel of the car. Now the lettering definitely looks out of place. It will be a while before I can attend to those, so this will do for now. I think I will take it to an exhaust shop to route the exhaust over the axle just to get it done. Driving it with the current set up is not an option. Can't wait to tear up the roads in this thing!
Gas Mileage?Hotrod?.. sounds like an oxymoron. I am saving pennies for one in my 57.(TKO 600) Rolf...the 32 looks brilliant and I am envious.... Them deco pens sure are a keen trick aren't they....... Use them constantly.... Keep rolling......
The Ford Picnic is next Sunday the fifth. I just checked the forecast. It's going to be 77 degrees. Hello summer tire burning season!
It is...until I get fenders on this sucker... Here in WA state we are happy to see one dry day per week so a highboy will not get enough use to make much of a difference. With fenders I plan to drive the wheels off it! Net worth is not only achieved by making a lot of money, it is also a result of the money you don't spend. Like someone said: There is a certain high enjoyed when your are behind the wheel of old iron, I just love it. My 2 cents...
From what I saw, when I drove thru years ago, you must not live in Eastern Washington. Sure looked dry out there. I used to think all of Wa. was green.
Man... I was just thinking how cool the lettering looks as the car is coming together. Glad to hear things are looking up. Great car with or without the artwork!
Indeed Triggerman, eastern WA is more desert like. The Cascade mountain range that separate us keeps it wet and mossy on this side and dry on the eastern part. We had the rainiest spring since they started to keep track in 1944 I think. No complaints, it's nice, clear and green here, but a car with fenders will certainly get more use...just saying.
I dont know how I missed this thread. Rolf, your A coupe was the total inspiration for my current project, and it's great to see you back and doing it! Your fantastic progress pics and simple explanations are very inspirational and motivational. Dang, your A coupe was the number 1 hot rod in the world IMO, now it looks like I'm gonna hafta revise that.....
31 coupes are the new 32 coupes, hopefully ford picnic wont be the sad lonely affair of last year, when we all snuck out..... I might be a jackass and drive the firetruck. looking good Rolf, the car I mean, I'm not gay.... ask Dug
Yeah, and we are having the coldest spring on record...It's dang near June and it's in the low 50's right now
About Dug and Speedbaron, I don't think I want to go there. It is best to let them work it out. I remember last year about this time taking off on bikes heading east to your area Chris and I was met by 85 degrees. We were riding in our t-shirts before we hit Leavenworth. Weird!! I miss it, bring on the summer!!
Just want to think you on the info you put out on your a coupe build,it has helped me over the years and many others, just as bad ass as any ,but im liking your new ride also.
